Kelly Clarkson Shares Heartfelt Update on Healing with Her Children

Kelly Clarkson is focusing on healing her family, one moment at a time. The “Stronger” singer recently shared an update with fans following the passing of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, with whom she has two children, River, 11, and Remington, 9.

During a Q&A session on the Kelly Clarkson Show YouTube channel, which was uploaded on January 10, she described the current stage in her children’s lives. “My kids, they’re 9 and 11,” she said. “They’re that special little fun stage where they can wipe their own behinds, but they’re still small enough to, like, love cuddling and love snuggles.”

Clarkson also mentioned that there have been many challenges for their family recently, which has led her to allow her children to sleep with her more often. “There’s been a lot for our family recently, and so I have allowed my kids to sleep with me quite a bit.”

Even though her bedroom has become quite crowded with her two children and two dogs, Clarkson doesn’t mind. “It’s my two dogs, my two kids and me,” she added. “It’s a lot. It’s been really special, though, because the conversations you have during that time are pretty cute. So that’s probably my favorite time of day.”

A Life Remembered

Brandon Blackstock, who was married to Clarkson from 2013 to 2020, passed away on August 7 at age 48 after a private three-year battle with cancer. Just a day before his death, Clarkson announced she was putting her Las Vegas residency on hold to support her children through their father’s illness.

“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows, and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.”

Following the talent manager’s death, those closest to him shared how he made a lasting impact on their lives, including his older children, Savannah, 23, and Seth, 18, from his marriage to Melissa Ashworth.

Seth wrote on Instagram on August 8: “You were a father, a son, a brother, and most importantly my best friend. You’ll have to watch me grow up from a Birds Eye view now but that’s ok with me. There’s no one else on this earth that I would want to be my dad because no one can be half the man you were to me.”

Meanwhile, Savannah shared that she and her father bonded over their faith in the final stage of his life. “He always loved the Lord, but 6 months ago he sought the Lord. He was hungry for the word and we did it together,” she wrote on Instagram on August 19. “He’s gifted me more than I could’ve asked for and deserved throughout my life, but 12 days ago he blessed me the most valuable gift I could’ve asked for. The gift of knowing where he is today, in Heaven with our Savior.”
