A Heartwarming Gesture from Former Students

In a touching display of gratitude, three former students—Kibumwana Furgence, Benson Kamau, and journalist Wambui Githang’a—visited their former teacher to express their appreciation for her influence on their lives. The visit took place in Kitui, where the teacher, Mrs. Kitema, now resides after retiring from Mukarara Primary School in Waithaka, Dagoretti South.

The trio had been planning this special trip since February 2025, as they were part of a group of friends who had studied together in primary school. Despite various scheduling challenges, they finally made the journey on September 5, traveling from Nairobi to Kitui county to see their beloved teacher.

Wambui, a journalist at a vernacular radio station, shared her experience with Info.co.ke. She described how Mrs. Kitema had taught English and Science to students in classes Five, Six, Seven, and Eight. “She was such a lovely teacher who moulded us to who we are today,” she said. “Although she disciplined us when we went astray, that didn’t deter us from looking for her years later.”

The day began with the group heading to the City Market to buy a beautiful bouquet of flowers for their teacher. They also did some shopping and placed a small token of appreciation in an envelope before arriving at her home. Upon their arrival, the former students reconnected with their teacher, reminiscing about childhood memories and sharing stories of how far they had come in life.

“It’s true what they say: People may forget what you said, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel,” Wambui reflected. “It was very touching that they gave the now elderly woman her flowers, both figuratively and physically, while she was still alive.”

Wambui expressed her deep gratitude for the opportunity to visit Mrs. Kitema. “I’m so glad we went to see her; she made us feel seen, believed in, and loved. I’m glad we put a smile on her face.”

This heartwarming gesture resonated with many Kenyans, who appreciated the effort the students made to show their appreciation for their teacher. Similar stories have emerged across the country, highlighting the lasting impact teachers can have on their students’ lives.

Other Stories of Gratitude

In another instance, Mr. Njoroge, a former mathematics teacher, was deeply moved when his former students visited him at his home. Led by MP Kimani Ichung’wah, the group paid a courtesy call to the man who had played a significant role in shaping their lives.

Mr. Njoroge shared photos of the event on social media, expressing how it brought back beautiful memories. His students’ visit served as a reminder of the strong bond between teachers and their pupils, and how even years after graduation, the influence of a good educator can continue to inspire and guide.

These stories highlight the importance of acknowledging and appreciating those who have made a difference in our lives. Whether through a simple visit or a heartfelt message, showing gratitude can have a lasting impact on both the giver and the receiver.
