Two of Malaysia’s emerging badminton talents have sparked online discussions following the release of images hinting at a possible relationship beyond their role as training partners.
Cheng Su Yin, aged 22, and Arif Junaidi, 23, have been seen together in what seem to be relaxed, non-competitive situations, sparking rumors of a potential romantic relationship between the athletes.
The excitement began when a local badminton group shared images of the couple, referring to them as Malaysia’s “first Malay and Chinese pair in badminton.”
The page made a confident statement that it was “no longer just rumors,” despite offering no further proof to back up this claim.
The message has now gathered hundreds of comments from supporters.
Various Tribunals, Identical Preparation Arena
What makes this especially intriguing is the fact that the two do not actually perform together in a professional capacity.
Cheng has been teaming up with Hoo Pang Ron in mixed doubles since November 2023, an alliance focused on achieving success in global competitions.
In the meantime, Arif partners with Yap Roy King in the men’s doubles category, where they have been gaining recognition in different competitions.
The pair is currently placed 17th globally as of 30 December 2025, a commendable standing that highlights their rising influence in the international badminton scene.
Although they participate in different categories, both are likely to train at the same venues and take part in comparable competitions, offering numerous chances to become familiar with each other outside of the game.
Nevertheless, it is important to mention that as Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) athletes who train and compete globally, being captured in relaxed situations might indicate typical team bonding instead of a romantic relationship.
Splitting Loyalties: Love versus Professional Aspirations
The rumor is not completely new; social media discussions suggest the couple was seen together during the World Championships, with a post stating they were seen “dating in front of the Eiffel Tower.”
It was reported that during a recent interview, when asked about Arif, his doubles partner, Yap, humorously mentioned, “someone else is already looking after him,” which further fueled the rumors.
Fan responses have generally been Malaysian – a blend of enthusiasm regarding the potential for a cross-cultural romance and worries that it could divert attention from their career aspirations, with some suggesting to “prioritize work first” as Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei and Datin Seri Wong Mew Choo did.
Both Cheng and Arif are seen as emerging talents continuing to develop their careers on the global stage, with Arif’s world ranking at 17th showcasing his capabilities.
Currently, it is still just speculation since neither athlete has acknowledged or refuted the rumors, maintaining their personal lives confidential and allowing their rackets to speak for them on the court.
As a fan once wisely pointed out: “They are still young. Let them concentrate on badminton first.”
However, as fans, they have consistently been attentive to any rumors and hints regarding players who are unmarried, frequently examining social media updates and public events for romantic indications – particularly anticipating confirmation from the players themselves.
