A new shopping hub – Sunway Square Mall – is set to open in September in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, adding Petaling Jaya’s list of destinations for retail therapy.
Covering an expanse of 300,000 square feet in total leasable space over four levels of retail areas, this makes it the 10th establishment for Sunway Malls within the nation.
Sunway Square Mall focuses on providing leisure and entertainment options.
The key tenants consist of Village Grocer, Bump Bouldering, TGV Cinemas, The Library by BookXcess, Count, KKV, Tutu Toe Dance Academy, and GoFit.
Boasting more than 150 stores, the shopping center intends to merge everyday living with recreational activities as stated in a press release.
It will include a broad selection of food and beverage establishments aimed at serving the nearby office workers, students, and residents.
It also includes 3,000 combined parking spaces.
The most recent addition to Sunway City Kuala Lumpur is Sunway Square, which includes two commercial skyscrapers, a performance venue capable of seating 1,200 people, and a round-the-clock library housing millions of volumes.
“Sunway Square Mall forms part of Sunway Square, which was developed with the aim of bringing together various types of areas focused on art, trade, learning, and enterprise,” stated HC Chan, CEO of Sunway Malls.
He mentioned that leisure activities, dining options, and entertainment facilities have grown significantly more crucial as driving forces.
“We observed a strong food and beverage sector continuing to thrive across our shopping centers even post the (Covid-19) pandemic.”
“Today, F&B outlets have increased to above 25% of total mall tenants. A decade ago, F&B only took up 15% of a mall.”
Sunway Malls saw a full-year increase of 5% in 2024 compared to the previous year.
The year-end celebrations witnessed a growth of 5.6% in December’s sales figures even though the school holidays were shortened.
The drive carried over into the first quarter of 2025, boosted by events such as Chinese New Year and school holidays.
The largest concentration of Sunway Malls is in the Klang Valley, making up 67.2% of the company’s overall net lettable space.
At present, the contribution of the southern area stands at 15.8%, whereas the northern area contributes 17%.
Sunway is currently developing an additional pair of shopping centers scheduled for completion in 2027 — the Sunway Pier with approximately 400,000 square feet of retail area in Port Klang, and the Sunway Ipoh Mall featuring around 1.2 million square feet of retail space within Sunway City Ipoh.
A RM3 billion mixed-use project situated next to the Bukit Chagar Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link station in Johor will include 400,000 square feet of retail area set for completion in 2028.
The mall conglomerate is set to control 13 shopping centers encompassing 8.2 million square feet of net leasable space.
