A24’s Rising Star: Marty Supreme

Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet, has emerged as one of the most significant films in A24’s history. The table tennis comedy drama, which premiered in cinemas on December 25, 2025, quickly became a commercial success. Despite being made on a budget of $60-70 million, it has not yet turned a profit, but there is still time for it to do so.

As of now, Marty Supreme has grossed $69.5 million worldwide, according to The Numbers. To break even, it needs to earn two and a half times its budget, which is a typical estimate for theatrical releases. However, the film is already showing signs of becoming one of A24’s most successful movies.

One of the first milestones Marty Supreme achieved was breaking A24’s opening weekend record. This achievement highlights the film’s strong performance right from the start. Additionally, it has surpassed 2016’s Moonlight at the worldwide box office, which earned a total of $64.8 million. Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight holds a monumental place in film history as the surprise Best Picture winner of the 89th Academy Awards. This win helped solidify A24’s reputation as a major force in the world of critically acclaimed and influential films.

Following Moonlight, 2017’s Lady Bird became the next big A24 movie to be nominated for Best Picture. With a box office of $80.1 million, Lady Bird is another film that Marty Supreme is expected to surpass. Currently, Marty Supreme ranks as A24’s seventh highest-grossing movie of all time, with Lady Bird at No. 6 and Moonlight at No. 8. It has also passed the 2024 erotic thriller Babygirl, which now sits at No. 9, starring Nicole Kidman.

A24’s top three highest-grossing movies remain Materialists at No. 3 with $106.4 million, Civil War at No. 2 with $127.3 million, and Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Best Picture winner, holding the No. 1 spot with just under $145 million.

Just entering its third week, Marty Supreme may eventually reach the top 3 on A24’s charts, especially considering its potential to stay in theaters longer due to its awards season appeal. Chalamet won the 2026 Critics’ Choice Award for Best Lead Actor and is likely to repeat this success at the Golden Globes this Sunday. Marty Supreme is nominated for a total of three 2026 Golden Globes.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 22, where Marty Supreme is also expected to perform well. The film features a stellar cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Tyler Okonma, and Kevin O’Leary. While it is not a true contender for Best Picture over One Battle After Another or Sinners, it is gradually becoming one of the biggest movies of the year.
