Following 37 movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) required a solution to “superhero fatigue”.

Over the last few years, the franchise has faced a series of underwhelming reviews and inconsistent achievements, along with a complicated separation froma performer who had played a crucial part.

Following trials of possible solutions, leaders searched through the extensive content of the MCU and brought in the antagonist Doctor Victor von Doom as the central figure for what’s to come.

Avengers: Doomsday, in which he will make his complete entrance, will determine if the superhero world can continue to draw in both casual moviegoers and dedicated fans.

But which individual possesses sufficient fame to elevate a franchise that has generated over $30 billion (£26bn) in global box office earnings?

Robert Downey Jr.

He was “the one person who could perform” the role, according to executives when theyintroduced him on stageat Comic Con in San Diego in 2024.

The announcement caused deafening cheers from the people present in the room.

Having portrayed Iron Man Tony Stark in 10 movies, Downey Jr. remains a major attraction for audiences, with the trilogy featuring his iconic character generating over… $2.4bn (£1.7bn) around the world.

However, critics viewed recasting him in a new role as an indication that those in control were running out of creative concepts.

As for which actors are appearing alongside Downey Jr. in Doomsday, it’s nearly simpler to list an A-list star who isn’t participating, given how extensive the cast is.

Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Tom Holland.

Florence Pugh, Hayley Atwell, Letitia Wright, Vanessa Kirby.

(Pardon us while we pause for a moment.)

Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Channing Tatum.

You get the idea.

With Doomsday hints being released, excitement and rumors grow about the MCU’s upcoming major release, set to hit theaters on Friday, December 18, followed by a sequel planned for the next year.

What have we learned up to now?

Caution: The following may include details that viewers not familiar with the latest MCU developments might find revealing.

‘Will Return’ teasers

Such is the excitement surrounding Doomsday’s previews, their “will return” conclusions have turned into a joke.

Initially, it was confirmed that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers “will make a return”.

Following his debut in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans’ portrayal of “Cap” emerged as a key element in the MCU’s most financially successful films.

However, the individual who claims to have “America’s ass” has spent more time resting on it since Avengers: End Game than working to save the world.

We witnessed Steve dancing slowly with his cherished Peggy Carter at the conclusion of the 2019 hit film, after having traveled back to the mid-1900s.

A subsequent flash-forward revealed him as an old man, symbolically passing his famous shield to his former partner – a man with wings – Sam Wilson.

However, in the new Doomsday trailer, Steve appears in his prime, so will Doomsday bring his younger self together with Earth’s greatest heroes in the present?

There’s also a short view of him cradling a child, which we are meant to believe is his infant.

Speaking about children, Doctor Doom appeared to show a significant interest in Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic) and Sue Storm’s son Franklin in a short but foreboding scene at the conclusion of 2025’s Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Could Doom’s strategy be related to this expanding faction of elite nepo babies?

I hope he isn’t close by when Steve needs a babysitter after his career break ends.

Thor’s daddy issues

The challenges of parenting are increasing.

Then, it’s Thor’s turn, as the second teaser for Doomsday reveals him emotionally praying to his father for assistance in safeguarding his adopted child.

Here, our conversation with Thor begins as the Asgardian deity appears to be taking a well-deserved mental health walk.

He appears to be fearful of a danger targeting Love, who has been with him since their 2022 movie Love and Thunder.

As he offers his prayers, he asks for the power of the “All-Fathers” in order to “fight again”.

Thor has endured many hammer strikes throughout his history.

His cherished Jane Foster entered the afterlife, passing through the pearly gates of Valhalla, while his brother Loki alternates unpredictably between friend and foe.

Oh, brother.

Thor is completely on his knees, while Doom has only just begun.

X-Men – at last!

It has taken a long time to arrive.

Beginning in 2000, the initial X-Men movie franchise saw mixed results over the course of 13 films.

In general, they were a significant influence, generating billions of dollars at the box office with a lineup featuring well-known actors.

Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century FoxIn 2017, film rights for X-Men characters were acquired, bringing them back into the Marvel portfolio that the company already managed.

The bosses had been holding back their mutants, but now the restrictions are lifted, as the newest teaser reveals they are joining the MCU.

The X-Men’s mansion could use a thorough cleaning, couldn’t it?

However, the complete power of energy erupting from Cyclops’ visor should destroy those webs.

Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen reprise their roles as Professor X and Magneto.

At minimum, the characters’ connection is complex.

At its most harmful, it can be volatile.

Here, they exchange tired smiles and contemplate ideas about death and what remains behind.

History shows us that Magneto’s invasive thoughts usually prevail, so who would he support if Doom reached out?

Nightcrawler, performed by Alan Cumming, and Mystique, brought to life by Rebecca Romijn, willalso return, while Hugh Jackman demonstrated that Wolverine remains a step ahead in hishit 2024 collaboration with Deadpool.

By selecting popular fan choices, Doomsday appears poised to spark the MCU’s grand ambitions for X-Men.

What’s next?

False apocalyptic hints and discussions about leaks are common online.

Are there fan theories suggesting a fourth “will return” is on the way, with some believing we’ll go back to Black Panther’s homeland, Wakanda?

Super Bowl commercials are perfect for revealing previews, so is Doomsday aiming for a touchdown on Sunday, February 8?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day might have its moment during one of the world’s most-viewed events.

Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, making his cinematic debut on Friday, 31 July, while the threat of Doomsday approaches screens in December.

A sequel titled Secret Wars is set to release in December 2027.

It has been some time since the MCU’s box office and critical achievements reached their peak, but Fantastic Four: First Steps enabled it to regain its momentum after earning over $500 million (£372m) globally.

And if Marvel is introducing Spider-Man alongside Robert Downey Jr. in a villainous role for the conflict, it might soon return to the pinnacle of box office success.
