The 55-year-old performer shared thoughts about becoming part of the 2009 castInvictus,and what it meant to work with a director he greatly respected during a recent appearance on theConan O’Brien Needs a Companion podcast.
Throughout the discussion, Damon emphasized the rigorous training involved in his role.
“So I was portraying a South African rugby player, and that’s a very challenging accent to master,” Damon said, mentioning he “spent six months” collaborating with a dialect coach to perfect the accent of rugby player Francois Pienaar—the actual captain of South Africa’s national rugby team.
[The coach] would arrive from 9 to 5, Monday through Friday,” he stated. “It was a significant amount of work.
Desiring his effort to be evident in his performance, Damon came to the set expecting several attempts to perfect it, but was instead denied.
I arrived, and I’m prepared, and this is my opportunity to work with one of my idols,” Damon said to O’Brien. “On the very first try, I did it… There are several approaches I’m considering for the scene, and he simply says, ‘Cut, print, move on.’
I go, ‘Hold on, hold on, hold on, boss. I want to, you know, do another one. That was the first one!’” he remembered. “[Eastwood] says, ‘Why? Do you want to waste everyone’s time?’ And I replied, ‘No, I guess we’re moving on.’

Nevertheless, Damon stated on the podcast that the conversation did not result in any lingering resentment. TheGood Will Hunting The actor highlighted that “there was a kindness” in Eastwood’s rejection and described the director as “a lovely guy.”
