Michele Woods-Baxter Thrives as USF Women’s Basketball Interim Coach

A New Era for USF Women’s Basketball

Michele Woods-Baxter has taken on the role of interim head coach for the USF women’s basketball team, stepping into a position that was left vacant when long-time coach Jose Fernandez moved on to pursue opportunities in the WNBA. Since taking over, Woods-Baxter has led the Bulls to a four-game winning streak, showcasing her ability to lead and inspire the team.

TAMPA, Fla. – The USF women’s basketball team is currently riding a wave of success, having secured four consecutive victories within the American Conference. This momentum has been fueled by the strong leadership of interim head coach Michele Woods-Baxter, who has brought a new energy to the program.

“It always helps when you have great kids and a great locker room,” Woods-Baxter said, reflecting on the team’s recent performance.

A Major Change in Leadership

The transition in coaching came with its challenges. Before the season began, the team experienced a significant shift when longtime head coach Jose Fernandez left for the WNBA. This move left Woods-Baxter, who had previously served as an assistant coach, in charge of the team.

“After Jose left, we had a scrimmage just four days later,” Woods-Baxter shared. “Trying to bring an emotional team together. I knew we were going to be alright. I truly felt that.”

Woods-Baxter’s presence on the sidelines has been a change for the players, but they have embraced her leadership. Her experience as an assistant has given her a unique perspective, and she has quickly adapted to her new role.

“She’s never been a head coach, and she’s doing the damn thing,” said Edyn Battle, a USF grad student guard. “That’s my girl right here.”

Embracing the Challenge

The support from the players has been crucial for Woods-Baxter as she navigates this new chapter in her career. She has received praise from her teammates, who recognize the effort she has put into leading the team.

“She’s had to fight through a new position into something she might not be as comfortable with, and she’s excelled at it,” said Stefanie Ingram, a redshirt junior guard. “But what’s made the new leader in charge the most comfortable are her players.”

Woods-Baxter has found comfort in the dedication of her players, who consistently show up ready to work each day. “They come in ready to work every day,” she said. “There’s no screaming and hollering to get them going. They bring it. They bring it every day.”

A Strong Team Dynamic

The bond between the players and their coach has been a key factor in the team’s success. Woods-Baxter has expressed how much the support from her team means to her.

“For them to be so bought in and to not worry and be like, ‘No coach, we got you,'” she said. “‘We got you. We got this.’ It meant a lot. It meant a lot to me.”

This level of trust and commitment has created a positive environment where everyone can thrive.

“I enjoy it,” Woods-Baxter said. “They are great kids. It makes it a lot of fun. They like to have fun and I like to have fun with them.”

Looking Ahead

As the season continues, Woods-Baxter and the Bulls will face new challenges. Their next game is against Wichita State at home on Saturday night, where they will look to maintain their winning streak.

The journey for Woods-Baxter and the team has been one of growth, resilience, and unity. With the support of her players and a clear vision for the future, she is making the most of this opportunity.
