Netflix unveils year’s most entertaining film

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Hollywood’s top pals, havereunited for the crime thriller The Riplike Miami police officers who are members of a group that uncovers a cache estimated to be worth $20 million (£14.8m) in a safe house.

They need to tally the funds before departing the location, yet they must also endure the night as doubts begin to arise.

“I don’t believe there’s a more enjoyable movie you’ll watch this year. I really don’t,” claims writer-director Joe Carnahan toLive Video Streaming of a Film Online.

And that it’s January and we’ve just begun the year? This is the way to kick things off and get moving with some speed and momentum.

The movie is inspired by a real-life event involving one of Carnahan’s friends, a genuine narcotics officer who was involved in the actual ‘rip’ it portrays – a term used in Miami police jargon meaning ‘taking the bad guy’s belongings,’ such as money, drugs, or weapons, also referred to as ‘ripping’ it.

“In real life, you have to count the money twice on the scene, which took them 42 hours in the actual story! We couldn’t create a 42-hour film, so obviously we took some dramatic and creative freedoms,” Carnahan adds regarding the scale of this specific seizure.

Damon takes on the role of Lieutenant Dane Dumars, a newly appointed officer, while Affleck portrays his friend and fellow officer, Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne – and the casting decision was left to Carnahan.

“I always viewed Matt as Dumars and Ben as J.D., so that was a straightforward choice. I believe they would have been fine either way, which is great! They were just eager to take part,” he says about the actors, who also produced the film through their company, Artists Equity.

“It’s definitely the biggest film of my career,” says Carnahan, who previously collaborated with Affleck on Smokin’ Aces and also co-wrote and directed the 2010 movie remake of The A-Team featuringLiam Neeson and Bradley Cooper, as well as authoringBad Boys for Life.

The most rewarding aspect is the opportunity to collaborate with individuals you truly admire and respect. At my age—I’m not completely bound by tradition yet—but I’m in my 50s, and I lack the patience or courage to tolerate negativity and poor behavior.

You’re working with the best of the best when it comes to these individuals, truly an incredible team.

Carnahan also believes fans will be ‘very pleased’ with the movie – particularly because of its rewatch value, given how the storyline develops.

Hopefully, by the time everything is finished, they will want to revisit and discover how the process worked, and view the film from a new angle because they now have more knowledge,’ he says excitedly. ‘And they will notice the elements we hoped they would recognize during a second watch.

The Rip has launched on a review aggregation websiteRotten Tomatoesreaching a strong 82%, with critics commending it as ‘one of Netflix’s most boldly cinematic thrillers in recent times’ and ‘a traditional mystery of who committed the act, who is committing it, or who believes someone else is doing it’.

It features Golden Globe winner Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Steven Yeun, Sasha Calle and Catalina Sandino Moreno.

Discussing live streaming movie films online, Sandino Moreno commended Damon and Affleck for their professionalism and mentioned that she ‘never viewed them as producers, as when they arrive on set, they are actors’.

They’re very kind, very pleasant, and very open. They establish a secure environment for all,” says Calle. “I believe they chose an excellent name for their business and lived up to it; they aim for everyone to feel equal, and you can truly sense that on their sets.

Sandino Moreno portrays Detective Lolo Salazar, a member of the specialized TNT unit (Tactical Narcotics Team), and received advice from a real-life TNT officer named Lourdes, whom the actress says she would trust completely at any moment because she is exceptional.

She also liked the opportunity to handle and fire weapons on set.

‘It was soLots of fun because Joe enjoys it, so we filmed it many, many times,” she says. “In real life, I would never handle a gun, but in movies you’re firing blanks at a wall, no one gets hurt. It’s like, let’s play.”

Actor Calle, recognized for her role as Supergirl in the 2023 film The Flash, also enjoyed conversing with her co-star in Spanish.

Since we’re both Colombian, and when we hear each other talk, you can kind of tell from another room, and it feels very like home.

She portrays the “more fictional” character of Desi in this movie, the woman who is at home when the police arrive, but she valued how her role still felt like a genuine individual.

We were all meant to advance the narrative, but it wasn’t about who was more important than anyone else; it was simply a group of actors who enjoyed working together.

It is amazing to enter a place where each character holds significance and has their own motivation.
