A Major Shift in Streaming Content

For a long time, streaming service users have been deeply invested in the quality and variety of content available for their viewing pleasure. This has led many to eagerly follow the list of upcoming films and shows on platforms like Netflix. In January 2026, a significant development occurred as Netflix and Sony entered into a massive new deal that promises to bring major new movies to the streaming platform.

The $7 Billion Sony Deal

On January 15th, 2026, Deadline reported that Netflix and Sony had reached a global $7 billion movie deal. This agreement ensures that once it takes effect, all of Sony’s feature films will be available to stream on Netflix worldwide after their theatrical and home entertainment windows close. The arrangement is set to phase in over the next three years, with some Sony movies expected to arrive on Netflix as early as 2026. However, full availability is anticipated by early 2029. The contract between the companies is set to last until 2032 unless extended before its expiration.

It’s important to note that this deal only involves Sony’s upcoming feature films, not the company’s library of classic movies. However, the licensing agreements for some classic Sony movies and TV shows already in place will be extended. The exact duration of how long Sony’s movies will remain on Netflix has not yet been confirmed.

Given the uncertainty about how many feature films Sony will release over the next few years, the specific caliber of films affected by this deal remains unknown. However, considering Sony’s status as one of the largest movie studios in the world, it’s highly likely that this agreement will significantly enhance Netflix’s library and reshape the future of the platform.

A New Era for Netflix

When news broke that Netflix had reached an agreement to acquire Warner Bros., users were eager to learn what notable movies and TV shows would become available on the platform. However, Paramount has since been working to undermine that arrangement. Now, Netflix customers can rest easy knowing that the company has secured a remarkable new deal with Sony, which will bring numerous big-budget movies to its media library.

A Long-Standing Relationship

Long before the 2026 agreement, Netflix and Sony had a more limited relationship. In April 2021, Sony Pictures announced an agreement with Netflix that was restricted in scope. Unlike the new global contract, Netflix only gained the right to stream Sony feature films in the U.S. and a few other territories, including Germany and Southeast Asia. This was a significant difference because Sony had previously licensed its movies to other streaming services and networks in international markets.

The 2021 Sony-Netflix contract was for a five-year term. If the new $7 billion global arrangement hadn’t been struck, Netflix would have lost its domestic rights to Sony’s movies in a matter of months. According to Deadline’s 2026 article, there were reports that Sony was in talks with Amazon about an international streaming deal, but that won’t happen now. Netflix would have lost exclusive U.S. rights to new Sony films after December 31, 2026.
