Sebastien Ogier says Ott Tanakforced him “harder than anyone else” as the nine-time world rally champion honored his competitor and friend, who will take a break in 2026.
Tanak surprised the rally community in November when the 2019 champion revealed intentions to step back from full-time participation in the WRC next year, giving up a 2026 position with Hyundai along the way.

Tanak mentioned his desire to spend more time with his family as a major reason for the decision, but he also stated that this “isn’t a full farewell” since he won’t be completely leaving rallying behind. The 38-year-old acknowledged that his future participation in rallies next year is “uncertain.”
Looking back at 2025, Ogier shared a heartfelt message on social media honoring his close friend and competitor, Tanak, with whom he has experienced many intense and challenging matches throughout their WRC careers.
The conflicts persisted in 2025, particularly in Portugal, Sardinia, and Greece, where the two faced off in competitive matches for victories. Ogier secured wins in Portugal and Sardinia, whereas Tanak emerged victorious in Greece.

“Before the end of 2025, I felt compelled to say a few things about a piece of news I didn’t address when it was first released, yet one that deeply moved me,” wrote Ogier.
As you are all aware, Ott Tanak will not be participating in the WRC next year, and I believe we can all concur that this is a significant loss for our sport.
Personally, I will genuinely miss him. As an opponent, he was likely the one who challenged me the most, compelling me to explore further and approach my boundaries more closely than anyone else during my professional journey. Yet, above all, I will miss him as a friend.
Ott, you are an excellent father figure, someone I deeply admire. I wish you cherish each moment with your family and approach this new phase with the same resilience and sincerity you have always demonstrated. Life has a habit of catching us off guard, and who can say what future encounters may arise.
Perhaps this is farewell. Or perhaps it’s just, until we meet again!
