A law scheduled to begin in 2026 removes a tax incentive for supermarkets, farmers, and eateries that contribute to these groups, as part of a larger measure aimed at tackling the state’s financial gap.
One Omaha food bank is worried that the law will reduce the donations they rely on. Open Door Mission states that 90% of their food is provided by the community, receiving more than 18,000 pounds of food in 2024.

“Without this bill being in effect, we can expect a reduction in donations from restaurants, farmers, and other local organizations, as the state tax credit will no longer be available to them. These incentives are crucial, and we heavily depend on community contributions,” said James Cummings, a philanthropy officer at Open Door Mission.
Open Door Mission provides meals three times daily and offers pantry visits to address food insecurity, aiming for public contributions to balance the expected reduction.
“You aren’t required to remain at the Open Door Mission to enjoy a warm, healthy meal. Therefore, we provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the year. We also have men, women, and children from the neighborhood who come in solely for a meal,” Cummings stated.
