Golden Globes 2023: A Night of Surprises and Celebrations

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, marked a night filled with unexpected victories, heartfelt speeches, and a blend of glitz and introspection. The ceremony, hosted by Nikki Glaser for the second consecutive year, showcased a mix of humor, political commentary, and celebration of cinematic achievements.

"One Battle After Another" Wins Big in Comedy Category

Paul Thomas Anderson’s "One Battle After Another" emerged as a standout in the comedy category, taking home several awards. The film won best film, comedy, best director, and best screenplay for Anderson. Additionally, Teyana Taylor was honored with the supporting female actor award. This victory made Anderson only the second filmmaker to sweep director, screenplay, and film at the Globes, following Oliver Stone’s achievement with "Born on the Fourth of July."

"Hamnet" Defies Expectations in Drama Category

Chloe Zhao’s Shakespearean drama "Hamnet" shocked many by winning the best film, drama category, beating out "Sinners." Despite this loss, "Sinners" managed to secure two other major awards: best score and the cinematic and box-office achievement prize. Notably, "Sinners" grossed $278 million domestically and $368 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing original film in 15 years.

"I just want to thank the audience for showing up," said Coogler, expressing gratitude for the film’s success.

Streaming Sensation and New Categories Shine

The event also celebrated streaming content with "KPop Demon Hunters" winning best animated film and song. Seth Rogen’s "The Studio" achieved a meta triumph, while an inaugural award for podcasting went to Amy Poehler’s "Good Hang."

Oscar Contenders Excel

Several Oscar favorites took home awards. Timothée Chalamet won his first Golden Globe for "Marty Supreme," after four previous nominations. His win has positioned him as a strong contender for an Academy Award. Fellow nominees Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney applauded his success.

"My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up: Always be grateful for what you have," said Chalamet. "It’s allowed me to leave this ceremony in the past empty handed, my head held high, grateful just to be here."

Nikki Glaser’s Bold Opening

Glaser opened the ceremony with a pointedly political monologue, setting the tone for the night. She humorously addressed topics such as the age of Leonardo DiCaprio’s dates and Kevin Hart’s height, while also referencing the ongoing issues with Warner Bros. and the Justice Department.

Political Tension and Industry Uncertainty

The Globes were marked by political tension and industry uncertainty. Hollywood is navigating a challenging box office year, and the fate of Warner Bros. remains uncertain. Several attendees wore pins reading “Be Good” and “ICE Out,” responding to the tragic shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis.

Distinct from the Oscars

Although the Golden Globes are not directly correlated with the Academy Awards, they hold significant influence in awards season. The Globes are voted on by around 400 people, while the Oscars are voted on by over 10,500 professionals.

Standout Performances

Jessie Buckley, the Oscar frontrunner, won best female actor in a drama for her performance in "Hamnet." Rose Byrne took home best female actor in a comedy or musical for her role in "If I Had Legs I’d Kick You." Wagner Moura won best actor in a drama for his role in "The Secret Agent," which also won best international film.

"I think if trauma can be passed along generations, values can do," Moura said, reflecting on the film’s themes.

Stellan Skarsgård’s Historic Win

Stellan Skarsgård, a respected veteran actor, won the supporting actor award for his role in "Sentimental Value." This marked his first major Hollywood movie award, and he received a standing ovation.

"I was not prepared for this because I, of course, thought I was too old," said Skarsgård.

Television Awards Highlight New Winners

In the television awards, "The Pitt" won best drama series, while Noah Wyle took home an award. Netflix’s "Adolescence" won four awards, including best limited series and acting awards for Erin Doherty, Stephen Graham, and 16-year-old Owen Cooper. Other winners included Rhea Seehorn for "Pluribus" and Jean Smart for "Hacks."

"The Studio" and "Adolesence" Win

Seth Rogen’s "The Studio" won best comedy series, with Rogen also taking home best male actor in a comedy. The show’s humorous take on the Globes resonated with the audience, and Rogen expressed surprise at the recognition.

"This is so weird," Rogen said, chuckling. "We just pretended to do this. And now it’s happening."
