NEW YORK CITY — Calling all local artists, this could be your chance to have your art displayed throughout the five boroughs on a moving mural. The New York City Department of Sanitation is inviting artists to transform their 46,000-pound collection vehicles into works of art with the return of their program called Trucks of Art. Those selected for the program will receive a $1,500 stipend.

Adding to the challenge, artists will only be able to use supplies and household paints donated by local New Yorkers to bring their designs to life. This year’s Trucks of Art program focuses on the idea of keeping New York City clean. DSNY is looking for artist proposals that celebrate keeping NYC clean, sustainability, and the DSNY workforce.

Key Guidelines for Artists

When submitting their pitches, artists should keep the following in mind:

  • Using big, bold and easy to read words – Truck art needs to read from a distance and in motion. Limit the amount of text and shapes to help the public read your message quickly.
  • Work with variable paints – Artists will be working with donated or recycled paints of many types and colors. Designs should be simple to recreate with any type of paint available.
  • Plan for the canvas size – Artists will be painting nearly 400 square feet of surface on a collection truck, including the truck body and cab (optional).
  • Limited time – Artists will have a maximum of 5 working days to complete all painting. Keep the design simple and achievable.
  • Durability and outdoor-ready – The painted trucks will hit the streets after the reveal and be used to collect trash, recycling, or compost, year-round in all weather conditions. Bold, strong designs with few tiny details last longer.

How to Apply

Those interested in participating can submit their applications online for the chance to be selected. DSNY will accept submissions until 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 8. The program offers a unique opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity while promoting an important message about environmental responsibility and community involvement.

About the Program

The Trucks of Art program has become a popular initiative that not only highlights the work of local artists but also raises awareness about the importance of maintaining a clean city. By transforming sanitation trucks into mobile art installations, the program brings attention to the essential services provided by the Department of Sanitation and encourages residents to take pride in their environment.
