PM pledges ‘no break’ on fighting rising living costs in new year voter appeal

Sir Keir Starmer plans to focus on the cost of living in his upcoming campaign message to voters next week, pledging to “improve life” throughout Britain in 2026.

The Prime Minister plans to emphasize initiatives such as a cap on train ticket prices and road tax during several appearances in the coming days, promising that these adjustments will lead to “more individuals experiencing positive transformation.”

And as members of parliament come back to Westminster after the Christmas break, he will inform ministers that there must be “no relaxation” in the government’s efforts to reduce the financial pressure on households.

It follows a challenging year for the Labour government, marked by slow economic growth and internal discussions about leadership as poor poll numbers emerged ahead of the local elections in May.

The government’s choice in the Budget to maintain a hold on income tax thresholds, along with earlier extensions, also results in millions of individuals being pushed into paying increased tax rates.

Officials state that the adjustments outlined in the autumn statement, which involved a total increase of £26 billion in taxes, are “just and essential” to reduce living expenses and enhance public services.

Sir Keir has admitted that life remains “more difficult than it ought to be” for numerous citizens, yet he has pledged that increasing numbers of individuals will start to experience “a feeling of optimism” in the upcoming months.

At an event on Monday, the Prime Minister will address families, saying: “This Labour Government is with you, doing all we can to reduce the cost of living – and improve your lives.”

In 2026, the decisions we take will lead more individuals to experience a sense of positive transformation.

Reducing your electricity costs by £150, and increasing the national minimum wage.

We’re helping reduce the cost of your daily commute and school trips. Freezing train fares for the first time in 30 years. Limiting bus fares. And extending the fuel duty reduction until September.

He will say: “This represents genuine transformation that you will experience every day. Britain is beginning to recover, and 2026 will be the year when more individuals start to see renewal as a reality.”

I will utilize all available resources to assist you with living expenses and improve your quality of life. That is my commitment to each of you.

At the first Cabinet meeting of 2026 on Tuesday, Sir Keir will address ministers, saying, “I am aware that families throughout the country remain concerned about the cost of living.”

There will be no easing in our struggle to improve their lives.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch stated that the Prime Minister “anticipates appreciation” despite “being aware that his choices have worsened the cost of living.”

“The job tax caused inflation to double what it was when we left it, and their push for net zero has led to energy bills increasing by more than £300,” she stated.

At the same time, employees are paying increased taxes to support additional benefits and more social assistance.

Labour lacks a strategy to improve Britain, and working families are suffering as a result. Only the Conservatives possess the strength to reduce expenses, lower taxes, and restore economic vitality to the country.
