A Global Call for Cultural Integrity in the Age of AI

A new international initiative has emerged, urging European musicians to stand firm in protecting their cultural heritage and creative rights against the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. This movement, which brings together over 30 artists from across Europe, highlights the urgent need for regulations that ensure AI systems respect intellectual property laws.

The campaign, known as #StayTrueToTheAct, includes 17 Portuguese artists who are actively working to raise awareness among European policymakers about the importance of safeguarding creative works. Their goal is to push for stronger legal frameworks that hold AI companies accountable for how they use copyrighted material to train their models.

This initiative is built on a series of video messages created by musicians from various European countries. These videos serve as a powerful platform for artists to call on the European Commission to implement legislation that protects their rights in the face of AI’s growing influence.

The movement emphasizes the need for a balanced ecosystem where technological innovation can coexist with the creative industry. Artists argue that without proper safeguards, the unique human elements of creativity—such as experience, emotion, and intuition—could be undermined by AI systems that mimic these aspects without genuine understanding.

Notable participants in this campaign include Calema, Dino d’Santiago, Diogo Piçarra, and Pedro Abrunhosa. Each of these artists has contributed to the cause by creating videos that explain why it is essential to protect artistic expression in the digital age.

Pedro Abrunhosa, one of the campaign’s key voices, describes the creative act as deeply human. He emphasizes that creativity stems from emotions, experiences, and personal connections, and warns against the dangers of AI systems that could “vampirise” these feelings and present them as their own. His message is clear: artists must retain control over their work and have the right to decide how their creations are used.

Alejandro Sanz, a Spanish artist involved in the campaign, adds his voice to the call for transparency and consent in AI development. He supports the idea that AI should not operate without the input or approval of those whose work it uses.

The Importance of AI Legislation

In June 2024, the European Union made history by adopting the world’s first comprehensive rules on artificial intelligence. These regulations require generative AI systems to disclose the content used to train their models, ensuring greater transparency. However, despite these advancements, there are concerns that the implementation of these laws may not be strong enough to hold AI companies fully accountable.

Artists worry that the current efforts to put the law into practice might result in weakened protections. They urge the European Commission to remain committed to the original legislation and to defend the rights of creators.

The campaign was launched by Ipfi, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, with support from Audiogest, a Portuguese copyright association. The initiative remains open to all European artists who wish to join and contribute to this important cause.

As AI continues to evolve, the need for robust legal frameworks becomes increasingly critical. The voices of artists across Europe are a reminder that technology must serve humanity, not replace it. By standing together, musicians are advocating for a future where creativity and culture are respected and protected.
