The Rise of The Tank on Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video has seen a surge in popularity with its latest World War II film, The Tank, which has become a streaming hit after a quiet theatrical release in 2025. Directed by Dennis Gansel, who is also known for his work under the name Der Tiger or The Tiger, the movie initially premiered in Germany in September 2025 and gained regional success before making its international debut on streaming platforms on January 2, 2026.

Currently, The Tank holds a 62% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating strong audience reception. The film follows a five-man crew of a German Tiger tank as they embark on a secret mission through no man’s land on the Eastern Front in 1943. During this perilous journey, the crew is forced to confront their own inner demons, adding a psychological depth to the war narrative.

The cast includes David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, André Hennicke, Leonard Kunz, Arndt Schwering-Sohnrey, Tilman Strauss, and Sebastian Urzendowsky. Their performances bring a sense of realism and tension to the story, making it a compelling watch for fans of war dramas.

As of January 9, The Tank has climbed to the number one position on Prime Video worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. It surpasses several other popular titles such as the November 2025 adventure Trap House, the Jason Statham action film A Working Man, and the star-studded holiday offering Red One. Other films that have been overtaken include Follow My Voice, The Accountant, Tell Me Softly, The Good Neighbor, Wrath of Man, and Playdate.

The movie has remained in the Top 10 for six consecutive days, and it has been especially popular in Germany since its streaming release. In fact, it has been the number one movie in the country every day since January 3, including in Austria. This regional dominance highlights the film’s appeal and the strong connection it has with German audiences.

Prime Video’s TV charts continue to be dominated by Fallout, the returning hit video game adaptation series starring Ella Purnell. The show has maintained its popularity and remains a top choice for viewers looking for engaging content.

Director Dennis Gansel has a history of creating compelling films, including Before the Fall, The Wave, We Are the Night, Mechanic: Resurrection, and Berlin, I Love You. His two highest-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes are Before the Fall (at 67%) and We Are the Night (60%). However, The Tank has not yet collected enough critics’ reviews for a Tomatometer score, which means it is still in the early stages of critical recognition.

For viewers who enjoyed The Tank, there may be other similar films worth exploring. One such title is Nuremberg, a WWII docudrama directed by James Vanderbilt and starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek. While this film has received positive reviews, it has flown somewhat under the radar compared to The Tank. It is still available in some theaters and on digital platforms, including Prime Video. However, U.S. audiences are more likely to be familiar with Nuremberg than with The Tank.

Prime Video is set to release more exciting action movies in the new year. On January 28, The Wrecking Crew will be released, featuring Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa. Later in February, The Bluff will debut, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Karl Urban. These upcoming releases may soon overtake The Tank in the rankings, but for now, the film has made a significant impact as a sleeper hit on the streaming platform.
