The 78th Cannes Film Festival commenced on Tuesday night with a blend of political fervor and Hollywood glamour when Robert De Niro received an honorary Palme d’Or from Leonardo DiCaprio.

A fervent De Niro utilized his acceptance speech to tackle problems he believed were plaguing the creative sector and endangering democracy during President Donald Trump’s tenure.

“In our nation, we are fiercely battling to regain the democracy we previously overlooked. This struggle impacts everyone among us since the arts embody democracy. The arts promote inclusivity, uniting individuals. They celebrate diversity, which makes art threatening, thereby making us a menace to autocrats and fascists,” he stated.

America’s unsophisticated president has appointed himself as the leader of one of our top cultural organizations. He has reduced financial backing for the arts, humanities, and education. Now, he has imposed a 100% tax on movies made outside the United States,” he went on. “Consider this carefully… While creativity may be invaluable, it seems they have found a way to place taxes upon it.

De Niro stated that Trump’s actions were not solely an American concern.

This isn’t merely an issue for Americans; it’s a worldwide concern. We shouldn’t simply be bystanders watching from the sidelines. Instead, we must take action immediately—not through aggression but with intense fervor and resolve. Now is the moment for those who cherish freedom to come together, voice their protests—and naturally, cast their votes during elections. Over the coming 11 nights, let us demonstrate our power and dedication as we partake in this magnificent arts festival. Liberté, egalite, fraternite.

DiCaprio, who received thunderous applause when he walked onto the stage, emphasized the impact Robert De Niro had on his initial years in the industry.

Having grown up in Los Angeles, all the aspiring actors I knew admired Robert De Niro’s work,” Leonardo DiCaprio stated. “We analyzed everything about him, attempting to grasp how deeply he could embody his roles. He set the standard for acting; he wasn’t merely an exceptional performer but the epitome of what an actor should be.

DeCaprio remembered how he got his major breakthrough acting alongside De Niro in “This Boy’s Life.”

“The audition process was intense with fierce competition. No one was certain about who would secure the role… At 15 or 16 years old, I took the only action I could not bear to endure. I yelled at him as loudly as possible,” recalled DiCaprio.

The room erupted in laughter. As the tale unfolds, later that same day, Bob boarded an airplane alongside a producer. Art Linson enquired about casting choices for the role. In typical De Niro style, he responded with, “the second child from the end.” Fortunately, this referred to me, and that instant transformed my life entirely, kickstarting my whole career within the film industry.

A collage of his movies began with the blast sequence from Casino, followed by the iconic “Are you talkin’ to me?” speech from Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Drive.

The accolade came close to 50 years after De Niro first appeared at Cannes alongside Bernardo Bertolucci’s film.

Blending drama with popular tunes and timeless works from La Chanson Française, the story follows an accomplished head chef who comes back to her quaint hometown to assist with their family-run eatery along the road. This narrative was anticipated to resonate strongly with the mainly French audience attending the premiere night screening.
