Saratoga Arts Completes Major Renovations and Reopens to the Community
After a year of construction, Saratoga Arts has completed its major renovation project and is now ready to welcome the public back with a range of programs, classes, and events. The $2 million investment has brought significant upgrades to the venue, enhancing its functionality and appeal for both artists and community members.
Key Improvements to the Venue
The renovations have focused on several key areas, including:
- A new gallery with improved lighting and a raised ceiling that creates a more open and inviting atmosphere
- Two renovated bathrooms that meet modern standards
- An updated theater with a new sound booth, projection system, and sound equipment
- Replacement of windows throughout the building, particularly the curtain wall that now faces the carousel in Congress Park
- New lighting and ceilings in most classrooms, as well as a new door and a future patio leading out to the park
Additionally, the printmaking studio received major upgrades, including new plumbing, a new sign, and a sink in the newly renovated classrooms on the lower level. The WiFi network has also been significantly improved, especially in the lower part of the building where there was previously no connectivity.
Executive Director’s Perspective
Saratoga Arts Executive Director Amy Bloom highlighted the success of the project during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, stating that the renovations have positioned the organization to enter 2026 with a space that can support all the exhibitions, programming, and events the community expects.
Bloom emphasized the impact of the upgrades, particularly in the gallery and theater. “The gallery and the lighting are definitely state-of-the-art,” she said. “We previously had a building with draft ceilings and not very good lighting, so I feel like now we can truly showcase our artists’ work in a whole different way.”
She also noted that the theater now features a full sound booth and a brand-new screen, allowing for the display of any type of film. “This has been a long time overdue, and a year’s worth of construction has really made the space more inviting, more current, and align with the things that we do — our exhibitions, our classes, and using our theater for the community.”
Funding Sources and Community Support
The funding for the renovations came from multiple sources, including a capital project grant from the New York State Council for the Arts (NYSCA) totaling $766,000, as well as $1.1 million from the city and contributions from individuals and foundations.
Allan Weatherwax, President of Saratoga Arts’ Board of Directors, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support and participation in the project. “It’s overwhelming to see how transformed the venue is,” he said. “It’s nice to see, and it’s even better to have the high school all stars as our first show because that really centers us because we are a community art center, in the center of this community.”
Weatherwax also highlighted the significance of the High School All Stars collection as the inaugural exhibition, emphasizing the organization’s mission to make arts accessible to everyone.
Continued Programming During Renovations
To ensure that the community continued to benefit from educational programming and events during the renovation period, Saratoga Arts partnered with local venues and groups. This effort included hosting classes at various locations, such as CREATE Community Studios, Beekman Street Community Room, Saratoga Joinery, and others.
Bloom explained that the goal was to meet the community where they were and maintain momentum. “It’s nice to see, and it’s even better to have the high school all stars as our first show because that really centers us because we are a community art center, in the center of this community.”
Celebration of the Reopening
To mark the completion of the renovations, Saratoga Arts hosted a two-day “Reopening Community Celebration.” The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a cocktail party, an open house with drop-in workshops, building tours, and an evening reception for the High School All Stars Exhibition.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony drew a large crowd of community members and local leaders, who shared their excitement about the upgrades. Mayor John Safford of Spa City praised the collaborative efforts that made the project possible. “In my past life, I worked with hundreds of communities around the state…this is one of the most amazing cities, maybe in the county,” he said. “And Saratoga Springs is an amazing city for a number of reasons, but the one reason that I like to always point out is that it’s just a bunch of good people who do good things for the right reasons.”
Looking Ahead
With the renovations complete, Saratoga Arts is poised to continue its mission of fostering creativity and community engagement. The organization remains committed to making the arts accessible to all and ensuring that the space reflects the values and needs of the community.
