Outline:
“Sentimental Value” took center stage at the European Film Awards on Saturday, as the family drama directed by Joachim Trier received awards for best film, director, screenplay, music, and performances by actors Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve.
Oliver Laxe’s intense cinematic journey “Sirât” secured the most honors in the technical categories, earning accolades for casting, cinematography, editing, production design, and sound. However, “Sentimental Value” dominated the prominent categories, claiming six awards to emerge as the evening’s top victor.
The event occurred on Saturday night in Seville, Spain. Directed by British filmmaker and historian Mark Cousins, it began with Iranian director Jafar Panahi urging artists to voice their opposition to injustices such as the killing of demonstrators happening in his country.
If we feel let down by politicians, we should at the very least stop keeping quiet,” Panahi stated. “Because remaining silent during a crime is not neutrality. Silence is an involvement in darkness.
The nominees for Best European Film were five entries that qualified for the Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film category, each making the shortlist: Norway’s “Sentimental Value,” France’s “It Was Just an Accident,” Spain’s “Sirât,” Germany’s “Sound of Falling,” and Tunisia’s “The Voice of Hind Rajab.”
Arco” received the honor of best animated feature, while the documentary award was presented to “Fiume o Morte!
In the craft categories, Oliver Laxe’s bleak road movie “Sirât” took the lead, securing awards for casting, editing, production design, and sound. “Bugonia” received recognition for make-up and hair, while “Sound of Falling” was honored for costume design.
Special recognition was presented to actress Liv Ullmann, director Alice Rohrwacher, and producers Maren Ade, Jonas Dornbach, and Janine Jackowski from Komplizen Film.
As the ceremony approached, “Sirât” was the top contender with nine nominations (including nods for the Excellence Awards in technical categories), followed by “Sentimental Value” with eight, “Sound of Falling” with seven, “Bugonia” with five (though it didn’t receive a best film nomination), and “It Was Just an Accident” with four.
To clarify, no film that has received the European Film Award for Best Film has ever won the Academy Award for Best Picture. However, seven of these films have been nominated, with four of them being recognized in the past six years.
