Spanberger Champions Virginia Workers’ Rights

Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger Pledges to Protect Virginia’s Federal Workers

As the new governor of Virginia, Abigail Spanberger has made it clear that she will not let federal workers face the challenges of government shutdowns or furloughs alone. While there is currently no threat of another round of cuts to the Department of Homeland Security (DOGE), Spanberger is determined to use her office’s full power to shield these workers from the political and economic consequences of federal actions.

At the evening of her victory speech, Spanberger expressed her commitment to supporting Virginia’s federal workforce. “I will always stand up for Virginia workers — always,” she said, receiving cheers from the crowd. She emphasized that the current situation involves a significant portion of Virginia’s workforce, particularly in areas like Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, and parts of Central Virginia. These workers are not only essential to the state’s economy but also integral members of their communities.

Spanberger has consistently supported federal employees throughout her campaign and during her victory speech. However, in a one-on-one interview with WUSA9’s Simone De Alba, she outlined a broader plan to protect these workers beyond just words of solidarity.

“During my time in Congress and now as the incoming governor, I have always been vocal in opposing government shutdowns or even threats of them as a political tool,” Spanberger explained. “The damage caused by such actions affects many Virginians, including our economy, far beyond just those who work for the federal government.”

She added that her priority will be to continue advocating for the workforce and to oppose any efforts to use federal employees as a bargaining chip.

Addressing the Impact on Federal Employees

When asked what she would say directly to those affected by cutbacks and uncertainty, Spanberger shared her empathy for their situation. “I understand what it is to do a job you believe in, for a mission you serve at a federal agency every single day,” she said. “I know what it is to be driven by that commitment to our country and public service, and I will continue to carry that message.”

Spanberger also emphasized the need to ensure that workers impacted by changes in federal operations are not left behind. She believes Virginia must focus on helping these individuals transition into new careers, similar to how the state supports veterans.

“This is a place where Virginia has done things right in the past,” she noted. “Recognizing that someone leaving military service may not have a resume that translates directly, we have helped veterans find jobs by highlighting their skills. There is more work to be done here in Virginia to do the same for those transitioning from federal service to the private sector.”

A Strategy Focused on Retraining and Economic Growth

Spanberger’s approach includes retraining programs, business recruitment, and education initiatives. These efforts aim to strengthen Virginia’s economy by equipping workers with the necessary skills for future opportunities.

Building a Strong Team: Appointing a Labor Secretary with Federal Expertise

To back up her promises, Spanberger has already taken action. She recently appointed Jessica Looman as Virginia’s incoming Secretary of Labor. Looman, a former Biden Labor Department official, brings extensive experience in workforce development and economic growth at local, state, and federal levels.

“Jessica Looman has extensive experience supporting workers and fostering economic growth at the local, state, and federal levels,” Spanberger stated. “As a proud member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, she understands the importance of upholding workforce protections and preparing citizens for both current and future jobs. As Secretary of Labor, Ms. Looman will drive my administration’s mission to equip Virginians with the skills and education they need to build steady, rewarding careers and power Virginia’s economy into the future.”

Whether the challenge is a government shutdown, a layoff, or an economic shift, Spanberger remains committed to protecting Virginia’s workers first. Her administration’s approach is centered on ensuring that no worker is left behind, especially those who serve the federal government.
