Star Trek: Discovery’s Secret Location Exposed

The Series Premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

The series premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy offers a compelling look into the world of Starfleet, introducing viewers to a new generation of cadets and their challenges. Directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by series creator Gaia Violo, the episode sets the stage for an exciting new chapter in the Star Trek universe.

In this debut episode titled “Kids These Days,” Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) leads her starship, the USS Athena, on a mission to San Francisco, Earth. However, the journey takes a dramatic turn when the USS Athena is trapped in programmable matter by Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti), who has formed an alliance with the Venari Ral. A holographic avatar of Braka then appears on the bridge, confronting Ake, his long-standing adversary.

The cadets aboard the USS Athena must work together to free their ship and stop Braka’s plan to steal its warp drive. This marks a significant moment as the young characters rise to the occasion, showcasing their resilience and determination without the help of Starfleet — including Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery-A.

Where Is the USS Discovery?

One of the key questions addressed in the premiere is the whereabouts of the USS Discovery. After Captain Ake defeats Braka’s hologram, she asks her crew for a status update on the distress signal they sent to Starfleet. She soon learns that:

“Discovery’s undergoing a retrofit, and the rest of the fleet won’t arrive in time.”

This explanation provides a logical reason for why Captain Burnham and the Discovery couldn’t come to the rescue. As established in previous seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, the USS Discovery became the Federation’s primary crisis responder. From dealing with the Dark Matter Anomaly to aiding the Breen in their search for Progenitor technology, Burnham and her crew consistently saved the day.

The Discovery is also equipped with a spore displacement hub drive, which would have allowed it to instantly appear at the scene of any crisis. A “retrofit” makes sense as a reason for the ship’s unavailability during the events of Starfleet Academy.

The Connection Between Starfleet Academy and Discovery

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a direct spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery, set in the late 32nd century. It picks up after the events of Discovery, though the exact timeline remains undisclosed. The premiere serves as a quick explanation for the Discovery’s absence, ensuring continuity while setting up the new series.

The show also hints at what happened to the USS Discovery after Captain Burnham’s story concluded. In the finale of Star Trek: Discovery, Burnham and the crew attend the wedding of Ambassador Saru and Ni’Var President T’Rina. They are soon called back to the Discovery, which jumps away to a new mission.

It is likely that Starfleet Academy begins after the events of what would have been Discovery season 6, set in 3191 or 3192. Whatever adventures the Discovery had led to the need for a retrofit, leaving Burnham and her crew unavailable for the events of Starfleet Academy.

What Happens Next for Star Trek: Discovery?

Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) is introduced as a teacher at Starfleet Academy in episode 2, “Beta Test.” This suggests that she may have left the USS Discovery during its retrofit. The series finale of Star Trek: Discovery ends with an older Admiral Michael Burnham sending the USS Discovery on its final mission, which is later depicted in the Star Trek: Short Trek episode “Calypso.”

Admiral Burnham’s coda takes place 30 years after the events of Starfleet Academy, providing a glimpse into the future of the Star Trek universe.
