Starfleet Academy Breaks New Ground in Star Trek Legacy

Boldly going where no Star Trek previous series on Rotten Tomatoes.

Starfleet Academydared to go where none had gone beforeStar Trekno series has ever achieved this before, according to Rotten Tomatoes. unfortunately, i am compelled to doubt the authenticity of this recognition.

Many titles from the cherishedStar Trekfranchise has received positive reviews from critics in the past, but the new streaming series created by Gaia Violo and co-created by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau is the first to be on television.Trek to EVER be Certified Fresh on the RT Tomato Meter at 85 percent.

This significant moment, if it is indeed that, could certainly shift if season 2 ofStarfleet Academydoesn’t meet the expectations, just askStar Trek: Uncharted New Worlds. And it was during a return to the widely knownTrekfollow-up series on Rotten Tomatoes that made me feel compelled to examine the reasoning of the popular review-collating website.

Here’s my argument: Strange New Worlds season 1 (98 percent), season 2 (97 percent) and season 3 (88 percent) were all Certified Fresh individually by Rotten Tomatoes. However, while the show’s overall score averages out to94 percent, the series is not Certified Fresh by the website as a whole.

Come again? How does that work? Shouldn’t the total score beSNWBe Certified Fresh if each of the three seasons is Certified Fresh on its own? I feel like Peter Gibbons trying to explain that.Superman III scheme is “aggregate” in Office Space (1999), but I digress. (Continued…)

Is the Starfleet Academy really rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes?

Now, in Starfleet Academyin case, it actually launched at aperfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoesbefore descending all the way to 81 percent. However, as additional professional reviews came in, theStar TrekThe show’s ratings started to increase again. Therefore, Gaia Violo, Alex Kurtzman, and Noga Landau can now confidently claim that their series is the sole one to have achieved Certified Fresh status across the entire sci-fi franchise. Or can they?

Stick with me because this is where the numbers, excuse me, become ridiculous. Now, according to Rotten Tomatoes,Starfleet Academy season 1 is currently Critically Acclaimed with 85 percent approval. However, the entire series — uh, there’s only one season, Rotten Tomatoes — also scores at85 percent, but it is NOT Certified Fresh. As Chevy Chase once remarked, “It was my understanding there would be no math.”

I assumed something might have been lost in translation, but the Rotten Tomatoes page devoted toStarfleet Academyoverall and the other page dedicated to season 1 both indicate that 41 reviews have been submitted by critics. So, how can the newStar TrekWhy is a series Certified Fresh on one RT page and not the other?

Either there’s a Tribble feasting on Quadrotriticale hidden in the numbers that I’m simply not noticing, or, Rotten Tomatoes, “You have some explaining to do!”

Personally, even though this is a significant moment for the franchise, and despite how much I loveStarfleet Academy, my personal ranking of theStar Trekshows across history would featureThe Original Series at No. 1, The Next Generation at No. 2, plus Prodigy and Enterprise tied in 3rd place. How about you? Where is your positionStarfleet Academyend up on your own list of favoritesTreks? Or did the new series make it onto your list at all?
