Sandra Prokofi, an avid snowboarder and mother of six, has always found joy in her passion for the outdoors. The Incident That Changed Everything
On December 29, 2025, Sandra was snowboarding with three of her sons on the Upper Frenchman Trail when a tragic accident occurred. The incident left her with severe injuries, and one of her children witnessed the event, which has been emotionally devastating for the family.
According to Robert, the accident was a freak occurrence. Sandra was wearing a helmet and had all the necessary safety gear. He explained that she “caught an edge” and fell face-first. There were no other skiers or snowboarders involved, making it a completely isolated incident.
Medical Response and Ongoing Struggle
The Keystone Ski Patrol responded quickly to the call and transported Sandra to Keystone Medical Center before life-flighting her to St. Anthony Hospital. The situation took a grim turn when the family learned that Sandra had suffered a broken neck and spinal injury, leaving her paralyzed from the neck down.
Robert shared his emotional experience when he received the news from the doctor at Keystone. “The doctor called me, the one at Keystone, and he actually broke down crying, and that’s when I knew it was bad,” he said. Despite multiple surgeries, it remains uncertain whether Sandra will ever be able to breathe without a ventilator.
Family Support and Fundraising Efforts
Every day since the accident has been a nightmare for the family. Robert admitted that they have not fully accepted the reality of the situation. “Every day is definitely a fight for her life still…We know that she hears us and she knows we’re there. So I think it’s just critical times to be with her and not leave her alone.”
To help cover the rising medical bills and ongoing care, a GoFundMe page was created for Sandra. As of now, the campaign has raised over $107,000 out of a $120,000 goal. The family provided an update on Sandra’s condition, stating that as of January 7th, she is now on a tracheostomy tube for ventilation and still on full life support. She has a weak cough, leading to mucus buildup and issues with oxygen saturation.
