Ben AffleckOne of the most prominent figures in Hollywood, he is a renowned actor, a well-regarded director, and an Oscar-winning producer and screenwriter. The Boston-born performer began his career with small roles in unremarkable television shows before securing the part of O’Bannion in Richard Linklater’s famous film “Dazed and Confused.” He appeared in two movies directed by indie filmmaker Kevin Smith (“Mallrats,””Chasing Amy”) before co-writing and acting in “Good Will Hunting,” which made Affleck and his writing partner, co-star, and close friend Matt Damon household names. The pair received an Academy Award in 1998 for their original screenplay.

In 2003, Ben Affleck portrayed a foolish assassin in the poorly-received film “Gigli.” Affleck appeared alongside his then-real-life girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez. The movie has a very low 6% approval rating from critics onRotten Tomatoesand generated more than $7 million in global box office revenue, according toBox Office Mojo.
However, every cloud has a silver lining. In a recent conversation with Matt Damon forEntertainment Weekly, Affleck acknowledged “Gigli” for kick-starting his directing career, although in an unforeseen manner. “If the response to ‘Gigli’ hadn’t occurred, I likely wouldn’t have ultimately concluded, ‘I don’t really have any other option but to direct films,’ which has become the true passion of my professional life,” Affleck mentioned.
In 2007, Affleck directed the cinematic version of Dennis Lehane’s popular novel “Gone Baby Gone” (he also wrote the script), featuring Affleck’s younger brother Casey in the role of a private investigator looking for a lost child. The movie received positive reviews from critics (it has a 94% approval rating on)Rotten Tomatoes). After appearing in and directing the 2010 crime thriller “The Town,” Affleck returned to the director’s chair for 2012’s”Argo.”That film, which details the Iranian hostage situation in 1979, received seven Oscar nominations in 2013 and took home the award for Best Picture, marking Affleck, who also worked as a producer, as the recipient of his second Academy Award.
Affleck’s acting career has been back on track since “Gigli,” and it appears that Affleck now sees the failure as a “gift”— one that continues to offer benefits.
