Outline:
Jim Carrey could be considered one of the most cherished comedic icons in history, yetone of his more somber films is a complete failure.
Carrey, joined by a group of Polish actors, stars in the 2018 film “Dark Crimes”— and considering its reception from critics, he probably regrets being involved in the movie. Based on David Grann’s 2008 article inThe New Yorkertitled “True Crime,” which recounted the tale of a mysterious killing that occurred in Poland in 2000, “Dark Crimes” initially started as a project for the controversial director Roman Polanski (who has not been in the United States for years because of serious legal issues), and although Polanski did not ultimately direct the film, it was eventually filmed on location in Poland. Carrey portrays Tadek, a detective examining a murder that closely resembles one in a well-known book, and as he keeps investigating further, he begins to suspect the book’s writer, Kozlov (Marton Csokas).
It’s an understatement to say that “Dark Places” did poorly with critics; it’s among a small number of films that have a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So what went wrong? Why did this dramatic film from Carrey become such a surprising critical failure?

Reviewers greatly disliked Dark Places

With a 0% score, the critical consensus for “Dark Places” onRotten Tomatoesis predictably gloomy, reading, “‘Dark Crimes’ is a formulaic, disagreeable thriller that fails to turn its intriguing real-life story and a dedicated Jim Carrey performance into even minimal suspense.”
Individual critics agreed with this viewpoint, such as Owen Gleiberman atVariety, who wrote, “The movie’s rhythm remains consistent with its quiet, measured, and expectant look – it’s trapped in thriller-foreplay mode.” AtThe New York Times, Ken Jaworowski agreed, stating, “A compelling narrative becomes trapped in a sea of emotion in ‘Dark Crimes,’ a movie that deviates from its intriguing original – a true crime case – into a less effective effort at noir.” Richard Roeper at theChicago Sun-Timeshoped for something better for the entire project, but ended up being let down: “Material with significant dramatic potential. A skilled director and writer. A compelling cast. That’s an encouraging combination – but the final result is unsatisfying.”
At The AV Club, Ignatiy Vishnevetsky directly criticized Carrey’s performance, stating, “A few comments need to be made about Carrey’s acting: It could be the poorest dramatic performance of his career, a lifeless caricature of self-control.” In the end, it was Johnny Oleksinski atThe New York Postwho had what could have been the harshest evaluation of the movie: “That this act of crudeness was produced at all is embarrassing.”
Jim Carrey demonstrated his talent as a serious actor in a completely different film.

There are many frustrating aspects of “Dark Crimes,” but one that is probably most noticeable to Jim Carrey fans is that the actor is fully capable of delivering an extraordinary, emotional dramatic performance — and he clearly demonstrated that inthe 2004 movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”The movie, directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman, features Carrey as Joel Batish, a man who encounters and quickly falls foran enigmatic woman called Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet), only for their relationship to break down after a short time. This is where the main idea of the movie comes into play; Joel discovers a company in New York named Lacuna that can erase entire relationships from your mind, reducing heartache and sorrow.
Carrey is, as anyone who has watched “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” can confirm, a true standout in this movie. During the process, he comes to realize hedoesn’tHe wants to erase his memories of Clementine, and his chaotic journey through his own mind is a visually stunning experience. It’s certainly disappointing, considering that one of his other major dramatic films ended up being a failure.
