Melissa Leo has revealed unexpectedly that she had a “far more successful career” prior to winning an Oscar forthe sports biopic The Fighter.
The 65-year-old performer won the Academy Award in 2011 for her supporting role inDavid O. Russell’s movie as Alice Ward, the mother of actual boxers Micky Ward and his half-brother Dicky Eckland, depicted in the movie by Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, respectively. Bale was also awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
In a recent discussion featured inThe Guardian, Leo answered a reader’s query regarding what crossed her mind when she approached to accept the highly sought-after award.
One loses their mind,” she confessed. “I had received numerous notable awards for The Fighterthat season, and sat in that huge massive theatre thinking: ‘Well, it certainlyis possible.’”
She remembered: “Kirk Douglas came out to present the best supporting actress award, opened the envelope, and announced my name. I was so thrilled to meet him— that was all I could think about.”

I looked toward the building, which in most theaters, you can spot by glancing slightly above your line of sight,” she recalled. “At the Dolby Theatre, you need to lift your chin as if you’re about to climb Mount Everest. Every actor, director, and producer you know is looking directly at you.
Leo shared that after stepping onto the stage to receive the award, “I then used a curse word, and I still feel bad about it. I curse frequently, but you can’t swear on network TV. Thank goodness for the 10-second delay, which was put in place for people like me who tend to curse.”
Having mentioned that, receiving an Oscar hasn’t benefited me or my professional path,” she stated, admitting, “I never envisioned it, I never desired it, and I had a more successful career prior to winning.
Responding to another reader, Leo stated that after her praised performance in The Fighter, she was only given parts as “older, unpleasant women.”
I don’t want to do that anymore,” she stated. “The sign of an exceptional actor is someone who has versatility and doesn’t keep appearing in the same role repeatedly. I’m willing to take on what’s offered to me — except afterThe Fighter.”
While The Fighter was Leo’s first-ever Academy Award victory, it was also her second nomination. She had earlier received a Best Actress nomination in 2009 for her leading role in the crime dramaFrozen River.
She went on to receive a Primetime Emmy Award in 2013 for her guest appearance on Louis C.K.’s comedy drama series,Louie. She subsequently appeared in the 2017 Netflix movieThe Most Detested Woman in Americaas the founder of American Atheists, Madalyn Murray O’Hair.
However, Leo has spent much of the last ten years starring in a series of low-budget thrillers and direct-to-streaming dramas, includingThe Clean Up Crew (2024) and Guns Up (2025).
