Sandra Kohler, the founder of Independent Cinema, has always had a deep passion for movies. Her love for film began early in life when her parents allowed her to have a TV in her room. "I was raised by movies. My parents made the mistake of putting a TV in my room when I was pretty young, and I would watch movies all night long. We had all the movie channels, and that is what I did," Kohler shared.
This passion eventually led her to fulfill a dream of creating a movie theater. "A friend of mine and I were talking about starting a theatre for several years actually. We tossed idea back and forth. Both of us love movies … love sharing movies with other people … and about a year ago, with Huntsville growing so much, we thought why don’t we just try to do it," Kohler explained.
A Unique Film Experience
Independent Cinema at Lowe Mill is designed to offer a different kind of moviegoing experience. The name "Independent" reflects their commitment to showcasing films that might typically be seen at arthouses or film festivals. "Normally we try to do things that people haven’t seen in the theatre. We share a lot of repertory stuff, like cult films, or documentaries, or arthouse stuff," Kohler said.
The atmosphere of the theater is also distinct from traditional movie venues. "It’s a different vibe than going to a big historic theatre. We would love to be that luxurious one day. But it’s a different vibe, it’s more cozy. It’s laid back, but people enjoy it," Kohler noted.
Creating a Comfortable Space
Kohler and her husband envisioned a space that feels like a comfortable living room. "My husband and I were talking when we were designing the space and I said I really want this to be like our living room at home. We like to host friends at home and watch movies. We haven’t had time to do that lately. We wanted to bring just that vibe of just a cool living room hangout to the theatre," she added.

Independent Cinema is located at Lowe Mill. Visitors can find it on the dock side, on the left as they enter. The specific location is Studio 150 at Lowe Mill.
