Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are well-known for their close friendship in Hollywood, making them perfect for a buddy cop film. In Joe Carnahan’s latest heist thriller”The Ledge” (read /Film’s review here)They play as Miami narcotics officers Dane Dumars and JD Byrne, respectively. The film focuses on the tactical unit, headed by Dumars, uncovering $20 million in drug cash at a hidden residence, sparking a complex network of deception and violence regarding which officer is or isn’t corrupt.

The film’s physically imposing cast features not only Damon and Affleck but also Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, Teyana Taylor, and others. Nevertheless, before any of their names appear in the closing credits, there is a dedication: “In Loving Memory of Jake William Casiano.” This name carries a genuine sorrowful story.

The origin of “The Rip” was a genuine Miami drug operation in 2016 that uncovered $24 million (covered by the Miami Herald). Carnahan learned about it from his friend Chris Casiano, a genuine Miami police officer. PerCarnahan’s conversation with /Film’s Ben Pearson, the the movie’s plot is significantly disconnected from reality. Still, Carnahan hired Casiano on “The Rip” as a technical consultant … and not merely to achieve a somewhat accurate sense of the film.

The son of Casino, Jake William, was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away in 2021 at the age of 11. The film serves as a tribute to his memory. Inan interview regarding “The Rip” with Gold Derby, Carnahan stated: “It was crucial for me that [Jake] be the first name you encounter, as it conveyed that there was a pulsating heart at the core [of the film].”

Nevertheless, delivering that message accurately was a careful task for Carnahan.

The Rip honors the late son of the film’s technical consultant, Chris Casiano.

During his conversation with Gold Derby, Joe Carnahan talked about the tribute to Jake William Casiano. Although Chris Casiano approved of it, Carnahan described the situation as “complicated” for them.

You need to go to your friend and tell them, ‘I don’t want this to come across as taking advantage or being cheap, and I don’t want to use the memory of your son.’ […] ‘Is it possible for us to make a way to channel this sorrow and sadness into something, perhaps creating a lasting tribute to Jake for the brief time he was here on Earth?’

Certainly, the homage to Jake Casiano isn’t just added at the end of the credits; it influences the film’s narrative. Damon’s character, Lieutenant Dumars, also lost a son to cancer, and a portion of his development in the movie revolves around coping with his sorrow.Speaking to Decider, Carnahan stated that Dumars’ entire personality was “loosely” inspired by Chris Casiano, and that “The Rip” was “me trying to imagine something that would help my friend cope with grief […] a awkward way of trying to give him something.”

It’s clear, according to Carnahan’s conversation with Gold Derby, that he shed tears alongside Chris Casiano when he showed the film to him.

“Thick” is available on Netflix.
