A New Year, A New Wave of Exciting Movies

As the new year begins, the film industry is brimming with anticipation for a variety of upcoming releases. While big-budget sequels have continued to dominate the box office, 2025 also saw a surge in original films that captivated audiences. Titles like Sinners, Weapons and One Battle After Another stood out, as did fresh interpretations of classic stories such as Frankenstein and Superman. With 2026 on the horizon, there are even more exciting movies to look forward to.

The coming year promises a mix of sequels, prequels, originals, and remakes, each bringing something unique to the table. Many of these films feature acclaimed directors, big-name actors, or well-loved source materials, making them highly anticipated by fans. Although it remains to be seen if they will become hits, here are ten films that are generating a lot of buzz.

Wuthering Heights Is a Controversial New Adaptation

Loosely based on Emily Brontë’s classic novel, Wuthering Heights tells the tragic story of doomed romance and revenge. The latest adaptation, directed by Emerald Fennell, stars Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. These casting choices have sparked controversy among book fans due to differences in age and racial background from the characters in the original story.

The film caused a stir when its first trailer was released, featuring a series of suggestive images set to music by Charlie XCX. While some book purists have criticized the trailer’s erotic tone, which deviates from the original novel, others are intrigued by Fennell’s vision. Fans are also excited about the accompanying album by Charlie XCX, which will debut alongside the film on February 13.

The Bride! Will Finally Give the Bride of Frankenstein Her Due

There have been many movies inspired by or directly adapting Frankenstein, but The Bride! looks to be a unique take on the concept. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, the film is set in 1930s Chicago and focuses on Frankenstein’s creature, known as Frankie, and his love, the titular Bride. Little else is known about the plot, but the trailer hints at a Bonnie-and-Clyde-esque story.

After the success of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, one might think that viewers have had enough of the monster and his maker. However, The Bride! stands out with its different style and focus on the creature’s companion. Audiences are also intrigued by the star-studded cast and are eager to see it finally be released on March 6 after multiple delays.

Hoppers Is Pixar’s Next Original Movie

Directed by Daniel Chong and starring Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm and Meryl Streep, Hoppers follows an animal lover named Mabel who transfers her mind into a robotic beaver body. She rallies the animals in her area to fight back against a local construction company, leading to some surprising consequences. While Pixar’s original movies have struggled at the box office in recent years, fans are hoping this one will be a much-needed win.

Hoppers is far from the first animated film to feature a human who turns into an animal, and its own teaser poked fun at its similarities to James Cameron’s Avatar. That said, fans of Chong’s other work, such as We Bare Bears, are excited to see him finally in the director’s chair at Pixar. Hopefully, general audiences’ interest will be piqued enough for them to see it in theaters on March 6.

Project Hail Mary Could Be the Next Great Space Epic

Project Hail Mary is based on the book of the same name by Andy Weir, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and starring Ryan Gosling. It’s about a scientist named Ryland Grace who goes to deep space to save Earth’s dying sun and meets an alien he calls Rocky. Fans of the book were nervous about whether a film could do its story justice, but many appear to be optimistic about the adaptation.

So far, Project Hail Mary looks to be a very faithful translation of the source material. General audiences have also been drawn in by its stellar visuals, star power, and celebrated creative team, with the movie’s trailer breaking viewership records when it debuted. Viewers only need to wait until March 20 to see if it lives up to the hype.

The Drama Is a Star-Powered Romantic Dramedy

Written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli and starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, The Drama is about a soon-to-be-married couple whose lives are thrown into disarray when one learns some unsettling secrets about the other. Little else is known of the plot, but a fake wedding announcement in The Boston Globe revealed some interesting facts about the central couple. It will be the first of three major movies in 2026 featuring Zendaya and Pattinson, the other two being The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three.

The casting alone was enough to pique general audiences’ interest, and its cryptic marketing campaign has certainly added to the intrigue. Additionally, those familiar with Borgli’s previous work are certain that whatever twist awaits them in The Drama will be truly strange and shocking. Just as the fake wedding announcement promises, audiences must save the date for April 3.

Disclosure Day Is a Steven Spielberg Original

Disclosure Day is an upcoming sci-fi movie directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth. The teaser trailer features Blunt’s character, a meteorologist, who starts speaking a mysterious language live on television, and hints at the presence of extraterrestrials already living on Earth. While further details are currently being kept under wraps, Spielberg fans are excited to see him helm another sci-fi film.

Up until the teaser trailer was released, fans only knew Disclosure Day as Spielberg’s untitled UFO movie, but the director’s name alone has been a big draw. If that wasn’t enough, it also includes a star-studded cast, a score by John Williams, and a wholly original story that hasn’t been spoiled by its marketing so far. Fans can’t wait to find out what it’s all about on June 12.

Moana Is Disney’s Next Big Live-Action Remake

Based on the 2016 animated movie of the same name, Moana follows a young Polynesian girl who embarks on a quest to save her island and the world with the help of a demigod. The live-action remake will be directed by Thomas Kail and stars Dwayne Johnson alongside newcomer Catherine Laga’aia. Although Disney’s remakes have had their ups and downs, this will certainly be one to watch.

Moana has already met with some skepticism as fans question the decision to remake a film that is only a decade old. That said, Disney’s last live-action remake, Lilo & Stitch, was one of the only movies in 2025 to make over $1 billion at the box office. As a result, expectations for Moana are quite high, but audiences will have to wait until July 10 to see if it lives up to its predecessor.

The Odyssey Will Be an Epic of Mythic Proportions

The Odyssey is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, among many others. It is based on the Greek myth of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he journeys home after the Trojan War and encounters many obstacles along the way. Following the success of Oppenheimer, excitement for Nolan’s next project was already sky-high, and the hype has been steadily building for quite a while.

Exactly one year before The Odyssey‘s theatrical release, tickets went on sale for select IMAX screenings, which sold out immediately. The marketing campaign has also been focusing on drawing audiences back to theaters by having trailers released in front of other IMAX screenings before being posted online. For those who didn’t get their tickets yet, there’ll be plenty of other screenings when the film debuts on July 17.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Will Kick Off a New Era of Chronicles

Based on C.S. Lewis’s book of the same name and written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will reboot the fantasy franchise on the big screen. This version will start with the sixth book in the series, which is a prequel about the origins of Narnia that is set before the rest of the novels. While it has already faced some backlash over rumored changes to the source material, many remain hopeful that it will be a good adaptation.

The Chronicles of Narnia movie series started strong, but fans were disappointed when it stopped at just the third book. Some might have their doubts about a new version, but most are just excited to see this series get another chance 16 years after the last cinematic adaptation’s premature end. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will premiere in theaters on November 26 and on Netflix on Christmas Day.

Werwulf Is a Mysterious Monster Movie

Werwulf is the next offering from director Robert Eggers and will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe. Nothing is known about the film’s plot yet, but it is set in 13th-century England and will presumably be about a werewolf. Given the success of Eggers’ Nosferatu remake and The Witch, fans have no doubt that they’re in for another masterful horror movie.

While werewolves are hardly a new subject in film, they’ve struggled to find their footing in today’s horror landscape. Audiences are optimistic that Eggers’ devotion to historical accuracy and unnerving brand of terror will bring something new to the genre and make Werwulf a modern werewolf masterpiece. The historical horror movie will arrive in theaters on Christmas Day.
