Golden Globe Awards Highlight Major Film and Television Wins

At the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, several films and television shows stood out, capturing attention in major categories. "One Battle After Another" emerged as a strong contender, winning multiple awards in the film field. Timothée Chalamet continued to solidify his status as a rising star, while "Hamnet," an origin story of Hamlet, gained momentum in the Oscar race with a win for best drama.

"One Battle After Another," featuring Leonardo DiCaprio in a touching father-daughter narrative wrapped in a thriller about resistance fighters on the run, received nine nominations. The film secured four wins, including best comedy or musical, best director and screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson, and best supporting actress for Teyana Taylor.

Timothée Chalamet, who starred in "Marty Supreme," took home the award for best actor in a comedy or musical. His acceptance speech highlighted a lesson in gratitude learned from his father, reflecting on his rise among Hollywood’s elite leading men. He expressed that gratitude allowed him to leave the ceremony feeling proud, even if he hadn’t won everything. However, he admitted that the moments of struggle made the victory more meaningful. Chalamet concluded his speech by thanking his parents and his partner, Kylie Jenner.

The win for "Hamnet" brought Stephen Spielberg to the stage, as his company produced the film exploring family grief and the creation of a Shakespeare masterpiece. Spielberg presented the award to a stunned-looking director Chloé Zhao, who was flanked by best actress winner Jessie Buckley.

Winners at the event encouraged people to continue attending movies, which has become an increasingly old-fashioned activity. In one of Anderson’s acceptance speeches, the filmmaker shared a cinema-related anecdote about his spouse Maya Rudolph: “I literally proposed to my wife in a movie theater.”

In accepting the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement—a relatively new category that recognizes both popularity and quality—director Ryan Coogler said, “I just want to thank the audience for showing up.”

Wagner Moura, known for his role as Pablo Escobar in the TV series "Narcos," won best drama actor for "The Secret Agent," a film about his native Brazil and its corruption in the 1970s. The film uses shifting perspectives and sometimes playful references to movies, including "Jaws" and "The Omen."

Television awards were dominated by shows that have already been recognized at the Emmys, including drama "The Pitt," comedy "The Studio," and limited series "Adolescence."

While politics weren’t overt during the show, a few celebrities wore anti-ICE pins, including best actress winner Jean Smart, presenter Wanda Sykes, and best actor nominee Mark Ruffalo. The black-and-white pins said "Be Good" in support of Renee Good, who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis last week.

Host Nikki Glaser closed the show with a tribute to Rob Reiner, who was found murdered last month along with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in Los Angeles. Glaser sported a hat for Reiner’s movie "This is Spinal Tap" and referenced one of its signature lines. “This one went to 11,” she said.
