President Donald Trump has pledged the United States to reconstruction effortsVenezuela’s oil industry, the main factor in the nation’s struggling economy, following the capture and detention of dictator Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces.
During a press conference on Saturday, Trump stated”we’re going to flee” Venezuelato facilitate a shift to new leadership, and did not hesitate to deploy forces there.
He stated that Maduro’s vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, is “essentially prepared to do what we believe is needed to restore Venezuela’s greatness” and will follow instructions from the United States.
We’re going to get this done correctly,” he promised. “We aren’t just going to handle this with Maduro and then walk away like everyone else—leave and say, you know, let it fall apart. If we just left, there would be no chance of it ever recovering. We’ll manage it properly. We’ll handle it in a professional manner.
Venezuela possesses the largest confirmed oil reserves globally, yet output has declined and the economy has crumbled due to U.S. sanctions and the leadership of Maduro.
Trump proposed that the U.S. could utilize Venezuela’s oil resources to fund the operation and reimburse American businesses that once functioned in the country but had their assets seized by the socialist government.
We are going to restore the oil infrastructure, which will require billions of dollars,” he stated. “It will be funded directly by the oil companies, and they will receive reimbursement for their efforts. However, the cost will be covered, and we will resume oil production.
Energy experts predict it could take multiple years, possibly nearly ten,to genuinely restore the Venezuelan oil industry and significantly increase exports.
Trump seemed to recognize that modernizing the nation’s oil sector will not be an easy task, stating that the infrastructure is “decaying” and that extraction is risky.
“We will be replacing it, and we will extract a significant amount of money to ensure we can support the nation,” he explained.
Although he highlighted the profits U.S. oil companies could receive, Trump also stated that the Venezuelan people would be the primary winners from Maduro’s removal.
However, Trump ran on a “America First” agenda and pledged to keep the United States out of international disputes. Although he aimed to conclude Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, Trump faced criticism from his MAGA supporters when the U.S. participated in Israel’s campaign against Iran last summer by targeting significant nuclear sites.
At the same time, voters handed significant losses to Republicans in the mid-term elections, indicating that Trump has not done enough to enhance the cost of living.
This led the Trump administration to reduce tariffs on specific food items and propose distributing tariff “dividend” checks, along with lower housing expenses through 50-year mortgages. And on New Year’s Eve, heextended tariff increases on specific furniture for a yearafter indicating that tariffs on certain Italian pastas would be significantly lower than expected.
When discussing the U.S. military involvement in Venezuela, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated, “This is America first.”
When questioned about how governing a South American nation aligns with “America first,” Trump responded, “It’s because we want to be surrounded by good neighbors. We desire to be surrounded by stability, and we want to be surrounded by energy. That country has significant energy resources. It’s crucial that we protect them. We need them for ourselves. We need them for the world, and we aim to ensure we can safeguard them.”
However, Trump’s opponents swiftly highlighted the inconsistency between his campaign statements and the most recent military actions.
Former GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former strong supporter of Trump who has now distanced herself from the president, said on Xthat “Americans are constantly dealing with rising expenses for living, housing, and medical care” while taxpayer funds are allocated to “individuals both within and outside the country.”
A few days before leaving Congress, she stated that Americans are tired of engaging in wars and backing foreign conflicts, but that the establishment Republicans and Democrats “continued to finance and maintain the Washington military apparatus.”
This is what many in MAGA believed they were voting to end,” she added. “Boy, were we mistaken.
In the meantime, Senator Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Senate minority, criticized Trump for targeting Venezuela without obtaining congressional approval or having a viable strategy for what comes after Maduro.
“To divert attention from the rapidly increasing expenses Americans are experiencing and the historical concealment of the Epstein documents, Donald Trump is trying to plunge Americans into greater global turmoil and instability,” he said.added in a statement.
