Outline:
Exploring the Tragic Story of Reena Virk
ITV’s new crime drama, Under the Bridge, delves into the disappearance and death of a 14-year-old girl that shocked an entire nation. The story is based on the true events surrounding Reena Virk, who vanished from a party on Vancouver Island in Canada in November 1997. Her body was discovered a week later by police divers after she had been beaten by a group of teenagers, knocked unconscious, and then drowned.
The series is adapted from the book of the same name by journalist Rebecca Godfrey. It explores the crime, which was described by Canadian media as a “national tragedy” in the 1990s, and examines what led to it. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a fictional local police officer, the show provides a dramatised account of the events and the social tensions that contributed to the tragic outcome.
The True Story Behind the Drama
Reena Virk was a resident of Saanich on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Her family were Jehovah’s Witnesses within the South Asian community, which was predominantly Sikh. This made them a minority within a minority. Before her death, Reena had faced bullying from her peers, which added to the complexity of the situation.
Journalist Rebecca Godfrey became deeply intrigued by the circumstances surrounding Reena’s disappearance and murder. She investigated the case extensively and wrote the book Under the Bridge, which not only detailed the events but also offered insight into the minds of the teenage perpetrators. The television series brings this story to life through a blend of fact and fiction, offering viewers a compelling narrative that highlights the social issues at play.
