Most dog owners find it frustrating when their pets chew on objects that aren’t meant for chewing, but this situation takes the issue to an entirely new level. In a surprising incident in Ottawa, a fire was sparked by a dog’s natural curiosity and its tendency to chew on items it shouldn’t.

Officials from Ottawa Fire Services reported that the fire was first noticed around 9:07 a.m. local time in Orléans, a community located east of Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. The fire was initially detected by a monitoring company, which alerted the authorities after receiving a call about an active fire alarm in a two-story, single-family home.

According to the fire officials, the monitoring company had already spoken with the homeowner, who was on their way to the residence. The homeowner confirmed through interior security cameras that there was an active fire inside the house. Additionally, several people who passed by the home also called 911 to report the flames, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Within four minutes of being dispatched, firefighters arrived at the scene and found heavy smoke and flames coming from a first-floor window. They immediately initiated a "fast attack" and advanced a hose line to quickly extinguish the flames, which had broken through a bay-style window.

As crews continued their efforts to put out the fire, they discovered a dog that had not been injured and safely carried it out of the home. Fortunately, no humans were inside the house at the time. However, one adult and one child were displaced due to the fire.

Later investigations confirmed that the fire started when the dog began chewing on a glove containing a lithium-ion battery. According to Ottawa Fire Services, the family dog had grabbed a skiing glove equipped with a lithium-ion battery used for heating. The dog brought the glove onto a couch and started chewing on it, which damaged the battery.

The damaged lithium-ion battery then failed and ignited, causing the fire. The fire department emphasized the importance of keeping items with lithium-ion batteries stored safely, ensuring they are out of reach of both children and pets.

In addition, officials advised residents to stop using any device with a lithium-ion battery if it becomes damaged or shows signs of malfunction or overheating. This precaution can help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

This unusual incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with everyday items, even those designed for convenience. It also highlights the importance of vigilance and proper storage of such items to ensure the safety of all household members, including our furry friends.
