Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Prioritize Their Kids’ Autonomy Over Celebrity Life

Ben Affleck, known for his acclaimed performances in films like Good Will Hunting, has always been clear about his stance on parenting. In a recent interview, he emphasized that he and his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, are not interested in pressuring their children to follow in their footsteps in the entertainment industry.

Affleck shared this sentiment during a joint interview with Matt Damon at the world premiere of The Rip on January 13. He explained that having a public life comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it involves children.

“You put something on your children when you have a public life and that’s complicated,” Affleck said. “We really want to give them room to figure out what they want to do.”

He added, “I wouldn’t push them into that. They’re brilliant and lovely and wonderful, and we love them and we’re proud of them. And hope that they don’t waste their life acting.”

Affleck acknowledged the privilege that their careers have given their children, as well as the similar experiences of Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana Damon, who also have four daughters. However, he expressed gratitude for his own upbringing, which was marked by anonymity and struggle.

“In some way, it was kind of a blessing to anonymity, to struggle, to where we started, which was just in the middle of nowhere,” he reflected.

While Samuel and Seraphina are still focused on their education, Violet, the eldest daughter, has already made her mark in the world of activism. She is currently studying at Yale University and recently delivered a powerful speech at the United Nations about the importance of mask mandates and clean air initiatives post-pandemic.

“My hope for this event and my belief in this community pressed on the belief that we can and we must do that again,” she said. “We can recognize filtered air as a human right, as intuitively as we do filtered water.”

Her passionate advocacy has not gone unnoticed by her parents. Jennifer Garner, who co-starred with Affleck in The 13 Going On 30, expressed her pride in Violet during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark in 2023.

“She’s a self-starter,” she said. “I’m proud of her no matter what.”

The Affleck-Garner family has remained committed to coparenting, despite their divorce in 2018. Their focus remains on supporting their children as they navigate their own paths in life.

As the family continues to grow and evolve, the emphasis on individuality and personal choice remains a core value. Whether their children pursue careers in entertainment, activism, or other fields, the couple’s goal is to provide them with the freedom to explore their own interests and aspirations.

The film The Rip premieres on Netflix on January 16, marking another chapter in Affleck’s career. For now, though, his attention remains on his family and the future of his children.
