Why Jennifer Lawrence Thinks Emma Stone Has Been Outshining Her for Years

Jennifer Lawrence Shares Her Rivalry with Emma Stone and a Regretful Role

Jennifer Lawrence has always been open about her friendly competition with Emma Stone, but she recently revealed the role that still stings the most. During a live Q&A with entertainment journalist Josh Horowitz at the 92NY Kaufmann Concert Hall in New York City on Wednesday, Jan. 7, the 35-year-old actress shared her thoughts on the role of "Easy A" that she wished had gone to her.

“I was nuts for ‘Easy A,’ and I really should have gotten it, right? The movie could have turned out great,” she joked of the breakout hit. Lawrence admitted that while she was disappointed, there was no real bitterness behind the playful banter.

She also touched on Stone’s recent SAG nomination for her performance in "Bugonia," noting that she herself was left out of the nominations for "Die My Love."

“We were over in [our friend] group chat, and she got nominated for SAG today, and I did not,” she said. “And I wrote, like, ‘What?’ And all of our friends were like, ‘Congratulations, Emma!’ And then I would just do, like, a sad face. And then every time she’s tried to talk today, I’ve just been like, ‘Why are you talking and not sorry? If you can talk, why are you not so sorry?’ ” she added playfully.

Despite the playful rivalry, Lawrence made it clear that there’s no real resentment. “No, she’s been beating me for decades, and it’s an honor.”

A Humble Start in Acting

During the conversation, Lawrence also reflected on her early days in acting, revealing that she never had formal training — something that led to some awkward moments in casting rooms.

“I didn’t do, like, [acting] classes or lessons, so when I started auditioning, I was just, you know, learning myself and teaching myself with no real feedback,” she explained.

She recounted one of her first auditions where she used a specific gesture that she thought was brilliant. “I remember one of my first auditions, I was doing this [covers part of her face with her hand] — which I thought was brilliant because it’s so realistic. And they were like, ‘Cut, cut, what are you doing?’ “ she continued. "And I was like, ‘Well the scene is outside,’ … and they were like, ‘Move your hand away from your face!’ So stuff like that."

Lawrence admitted that she wasn’t a good auditioner at first. “But then every once in a while, you know, you get a callback.”

A Journey of Growth

Her journey into acting was filled with learning and growth, and despite the initial struggles, she eventually found success. From her early days in auditions to becoming an Oscar-winning actress, Lawrence has come a long way.

Her candid reflections during the Q&A provided a glimpse into the challenges she faced and how she overcame them. It also highlighted the camaraderie between her and Emma Stone, showing that even in friendly competition, there’s always room for admiration and respect.
