Sekeres and Price

Laurence Gilman (previously the assistant general manager for the Maple Leafs, Canucks, and Phoenix), during an appearance on The Sekeres and Price Show, commented on Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford’s remarks regarding Quinn Hughes’ desire to play alongside his siblings.

Jim Rutherford has been around the block before. Clearly, he is an experienced General Manager, and seasoned GMs do not speak impulsively.

When I first heard about it and saw it, my impression was that the Hughes team has issued a warning. This could be from either the player himself or his representative, Pat Brisson, indicating that if the fate of this hockey organization doesn’t improve within the next two years—when Quinn’s contract ends—he will look for opportunities to play alongside his siblings instead.

When you think about it, they have an entire year to get things sorted out. If they enter the final year of the agreement and this person hasn’t made progress, having clearly communicated their direction, then they’ll find themselves in the same situation as the Calgary Flames did with Matthew Tkachuk a couple of years back.

I found this quite fascinating. It wouldn’t surprise me much if the New Jersey Devils reach out soon with an offer, essentially asking, What will it take for us to secure your services? You see, when discussing the Devils, one must acknowledge their abundance of talented young players and promising prospects.

You see, there might be potential for a deal there. That said, I don’t believe it will occur very shortly, but they are a squad with the resources needed to pull off such an exchange."
