Vancouver Canucks fans felt let down by their key player, Elias Pettersson, throughout the season, and they weren’t alone in their disappointment. Problems linked to Pettersson’s performance significantly affected the team dynamics within the Canucks’ dressing room over the course of the regular season. Eventually, these tensions escalated to a point where star forward J.T. Miller was traded away because of his personal disagreements with Pettersson.
It appears that the harm done to Pettersson’s reputation extends well past the Canucks’ dressing room and their supporter base, as reports suggest his standing has significantly deteriorated among most people across the National Hockey League.
Josh Yohe, an inside source for the Pittsburgh Penguins, wrote an article for The Athletic addressing fan inquiries regarding possible team maneuvers during the off-season. Among these queries was one concerning Elias Pettersson’s availability; however, Yohe’s answer might be considered the most damaging commentary on Elias Pettersson’s standing that I’ve encountered in written form.
Yohe firmly declared that the Canucks’ star forward does not have a good reputation among other players in the NHL.
From The Athletic
:
Why would anybody consider trading for Pettersson? The contract appears to be a complete disaster, and he doesn’t command much respect across the league.
This certainly presents a significant issue for the Canucks, who decided this season to let go of J.T. Miller but retain Brock Boeser. This situation becomes even more complicated when we take into account that Pettersson will soon be entering a phase where he has a complete no-movement clause as soon as this current season ends and the 2025-26 campaign begins.
The clear answer might be to arrange some sort of exchange, though as Yohe highlights
Who would ever want to make a trade for Pettersson?
Considering all that has happened? This is a grim scenario for the Canucks and it could potentially deteriorate further.
