Timothée Chalamet highlighted how Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name” significantly influenced his career when he accepted Italy’s David Award for Cinematic Excellence at the ceremony’s 70th anniversary held on Wednesday night at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios.
“Luca is arguably the most significant individual in my career,” stated Chalamet, who graced Italy’s premier film awards ceremony alongside his girlfriend Kylie Jenner—this marked their debut appearance on a red carpet together after having been romantically involved for two years—and his dad Marc Chalamet. In 2017, when Chalamet received his initial best actor nomination at just 22 years old for Guadagnino’s “Call Me” adaptation, he became only the third youngest contender ever in that category.
I began my journey as a struggling 20-year-old from New York trying to make a mark in the American film scene,” Chalamed stated. “Thanks to Luca Guadagnino and his decision to cast me in an Italian film, my career took off almost instantly.
“I don’t have any family ties to Italy. There isn’t a single person here who shares my last name, yet I strongly connect with the local film community,” he mentioned. “Had I not chased my passion for acting, I might have ended up breaking Francesco Totti’s goalscoring record instead,” Chalamet said, speaking about his admiration for the ex-captain of AS Roma football team.
“Piera Detassis, who serves as the president and artistic director of the Academy of Italian Cinema, remarked that Timothée Chalamet’s blend of European roots with his American upbringing positions him as one of contemporary global cinema’s most versatile and gifted leading actors. He has demonstrated an ability to excel not only as a nuanced actor but also as someone setting new trends and styles,” she stated.
