Texas politics received special attention this week on the popular pop culture podcast “Las Culturistas,” as hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers offered their insights on the topic.the state’s fiercely disputed U.S. Senate contest.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn has servedthe chair for over two decades, butfaces a challenging primaryagainst both Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt, from Houston.U.S. Representatives Jasmine Crockett from Dallas and James Talerico of Austinare competing in the Democratic primary.

During the episode that aired on Wednesday, Rogers informed listeners that he does not back politicians who focus their campaigns “too clearly on themselves,” and mentioned, “don’t spend your money sending it to Jasmine Crockett,” whose office hasn’t promptly responded to a request for a statement.

“Listen to someone who sent Sara Gideon a large amount of money in Maine,” Rogers said.

Gideon, who previously served as a state representative in Maine, was unsuccessful in his attempt to win a U.S. Senate seat in 2020 against sitting Republican Susan Collins, even thoughoutraising her by millions.

Rogers stated that he believes Crockett is already a “highly defined” politician at a moment when voters might be seeking someone with a less clear-cut platform.

Early surveys have indicated Crockettslightly ahead of Talarico, benefiting from robust backing by Black voters, though only by a narrow margin. Talarico maintains an advantage over Crockett with white and Latino voters.

Crockett has gained recognition as a forward-thinking advocate who frequently speaks out against President Donald Trump and other influential Republicans. She has concentrated on energizing Democratic voters, particularly those who usually do not participate in elections.

She won’t secure a Senate seat in Texas,” Rogers stated. “If Beto O’Rourke couldn’t accomplish it, Jasmine Crockett won’t either.

Talarico gained national attention this summer after he joined Texas House Democrats in leaving the state to block a vote on a congressional map supported by Trump. Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, presents himself as someone capable of bringing together Texans, including independents and Republicans who are concerned about the influence of billionaires.

I’m curious about this Talarico individual,” Rogers remarked. “I thought, ‘Oh, I haven’t come across him before.’ It would be challenging for them to categorize him as anything other than what he is, which is a growing Democratic political figure.

Rogers mentioned that he believes Democrats have a “broad chance” to secure victory in the 2026 midterm elections.

I’m simply aiming to succeed, and I genuinely feel things are different from how they were in 2016,” he stated. “The key to winning today is to harness the momentum.
