Elle Fanning Shares Excitement About ‘The Nightingale’ at Golden Globes

Elle Fanning recently shared an update on the upcoming film The Nightingale during her appearance on E! Live from the Red Carpet at the 2026 Golden Globes. The movie, which has been in development for over six years, marks the first time that Elle and her sister, Dakota Fanning, will star together on screen.

A New Chapter for the Fanning Sisters

The sisters are set to co-star in this historical coming-of-age drama, based on Kristin Hannah’s novel of the same name. The story follows two sisters in France during the early days of World War II, highlighting their struggles and resilience. This project is particularly meaningful for the Fannings, as they have never acted together in front of a camera before.

During the red carpet interview with host Zuri Hall, Elle revealed that she and Dakota have established some ground rules for working together. “She’s promised me that she’s not gonna boss me around,” Elle said, referencing her sister’s role as the older sibling. “That’s what she’s promised . . . the older sister. You can’t! You have to treat me like a fellow actor.”

A Long-Awaited Collaboration

Elle also provided an update on the film’s production timeline. “In a couple months we are about to go film,” she mentioned, expressing excitement about finally bringing the project to life after years of planning. She acknowledged that the movie has taken a long time to come together, but she is confident that it will be worth the wait.

Dakota Fanning also spoke with Hall shortly after her sister, and when asked what one thing Elle shouldn’t do, she jokingly replied, “annoy me too much” before laughing. Their playful dynamic highlights the close relationship between the two siblings, both of whom have had successful careers in Hollywood.

A Dream Come True

The Fannings expressed their enthusiasm for the project in a statement released in December 2019 when the film was first announced. “The Nightingale will be the first time we act on screen together,” they said. “We have played the same character at different ages but have never spoken to each other in front of a camera. For years, we have looked for a film to do with one another and then this gem appeared.”

They also reflected on their previous work together, such as their roles in I Am Sam (2001), where they both played Lucy, the daughter of Sean Penn’s character. “As sisters, to share our artistry with each other while bringing such a powerful sister story to life is a dream come true,” they added. “We are so lucky to have our fearless director, Melanie Laurent, to guide us along on the journey. Let’s do this, sister!!”

What to Expect

The Nightingale is set for release in 2027 and promises to be a powerful and emotional film. With its rich storytelling and the unique chemistry of the Fanning sisters, it is sure to captivate audiences. Fans of the actors and lovers of historical dramas alike are eagerly awaiting the film’s debut.
