This article includes spoilers for “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.”
The “28” film series hasn’t featured a consistent antagonist other than the Rage Virus, which originated in the zombie classic “28 Days Later.” In general, humanity has arguably posed the greatest danger. This is especially evident in “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” where Jack O’Connell’s Jimmy Crystal delivers a truly repulsive villain. But could this be the end of him? Perhaps. Maybe not.
We first encountered Jimmy Crystalduring the chaotic conclusion of last year’s “28 Years Later.”Jimmy and his group managed to rescue Spike (Alfie Williams) from an inevitable demise caused by multiple infected individuals. “The Bone Temple” begins with Spike following his encounter with the Jimmys, which soon turns into a brutally violent nightmare he cannot escape. At the same time, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) uncovers something significant about the Rage Virus through his research with Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), altering our perception of the infected. These narratives come together in a chaotic third act.
Jimmy and his gang, who were inspired by the notorious real-world British individual Jimmy Savile, are persuaded by Mr. Crystal that Kelson is truly Satan, resulting in a chaotic climax. At the end, Spike betrays Jimmy Crystal, and the final scene shows him crucified upside-down and attacked by the infected. However, we do not witness him transforming or being torn apart. This creates an opportunity for his potential return in the upcoming third film, in some form. What happens in “The Bone Temple” strongly sets the stage for this character’s return.

How could Jimmy Crystal make a comeback in the third 28 Years Later film

“28 Years Later” revealed that the infected are more complex than we had previously realized., even able to start a family. What we discover through Samson in this film is that the Rage Virus is similar to any other virus: its symptoms can be managed. After Samson is treated by Kelson, he regains his human side.
If we examine that concept in relation to Jimmy, even if he gets infected, could he still hold onto some of his resentment towards Spike and Jimmy Ink (Erin Kellyman)? Might that aspect of his humanity still exist beneath his infected skin? Considering Jimmy Crystal’s claim in the film that he is literally the son of Satan, the idea of him being brought back to life after being crucified would align well with the theme.
The chance of a more straightforward resurrection appears unlikely, but considering how bizarre this film becomes, it’s difficult to completely dismiss. More probably, any form of return for Jimmy Crystal would only intensify his evil, god-like tendencies. If he were to become an Alpha and lead a group of infected, that would be a terrifying prospect.
Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role as Jim in the upcoming “28 Years Later” film.film that is currently in development. We caught a brief glimpse of him at the end of this part, as Spike and Jimmy Ink rushed toward him for protection. It’s conceivable that different universes will intersect in the third film of this series, with Jim encountering a zombie version of Jimmy Crystal. It’s not guaranteed that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland will have him return, but it would not be unexpected given what has already been set up.
“28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is currently showing in cinemas.
