Recognition for Innovations in Port Logistics

The National Association of Government-Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has recognized the efforts of Truck Transit Parks Limited (TTP) in transforming cargo movement and reducing traffic congestion around Lagos ports. This acknowledgment highlights the significant impact TTP’s initiatives have had on improving operations at Apapa and Tin Can Island ports.

Addressing Traffic Challenges

At a press briefing held in Apapa, NAGAFF President Tochukwu Ezisi praised TTP for its role in alleviating the long-standing issue of chaotic traffic in the area. He noted that the electronic call-up system introduced by TTP has brought stability to the port corridors, which were once known for their disorderly conditions. This system has not only improved efficiency but also minimized human interference in the process.

In February 2021, TTP collaborated with the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Lagos State Government to launch an electronic call-up system named Eto. This initiative batches trucks in and out of the ports, ensuring a more organized flow of traffic and significantly reducing delays.

Impact on Business and Residents

Ezisi described the Eto system as a pivotal development for port operations and economic activities in Apapa. He emphasized that the system has helped reduce gridlock, which had plagued the area for over a decade. The implementation of Eto has restored order, enhanced port efficiency, and improved the quality of life for residents and businesses alike.

Prior to the introduction of Eto, traffic congestion reached critical levels, with trucks often stuck on roads for weeks. This situation led to a decline in investments and worsened living conditions for local communities. However, since the deployment of Eto, the turnaround time for trucks entering and exiting the ports has drastically improved, from two to three weeks to less than three days.

Economic Growth and Employment

The positive changes brought about by Eto have also contributed to an increase in property values in Apapa. Commercial and recreational activities are gradually returning to the area, reflecting the broader economic benefits of the system.

Beyond easing traffic, Ezisi highlighted that TTP’s technology has created job opportunities and stimulated economic growth. According to research, the Eto system has directly generated approximately 225 jobs and empowered over 500 ancillary workers within the port environment. This demonstrates how digital solutions can enhance logistics while supporting livelihoods.

Broader Implications for Trade

The benefits of the Eto system extend beyond the port operators to the wider economy. Faster cargo movement reduces costs and strengthens Nigeria’s position in global trade. Ezisi urged government agencies and stakeholders to ensure that these gains are sustained and not reversed.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining the standards set by service providers like TTP. Sustaining digital innovations such as Eto is crucial for ensuring smooth operations at Nigeria’s busiest ports and fostering long-term growth in the maritime sector.

Commitment to Progress

While commending TTP for its achievements, Ezisi called for continued efforts to build on progress. He stressed that the old tradition of failing to maintain improvements must end. Relevant authorities must ensure that the standards established by innovative service providers are upheld, monitored, and consolidated.

By focusing on digital advancements and sustainable practices, Nigeria can continue to enhance its port operations and strengthen its position in the global trade landscape. The success of initiatives like Eto serves as a model for future developments in the maritime industry.
