PETALONG JAYA: The Sarawak administration intends to introduce a unified evaluation method for Year Six pupils participating in the Dual Language Programme (DLP), aligning with global standards established by Cambridge University Press & Assessment (CUP&A).

The Sarawak Premier, Abang Johari Openg, stated that the education ministry has approved the collaboration between Sarawak and Cambridge University to implement this program starting from October 2025, according to Bernama.

“This DLP program will undergo review and validation by Cambridge University Press and Assessment to guarantee its execution meets global benchmarks,” he stated in a release from the Sarawak public communications unit today.

The announcement came following the signing of a service agreement between CUP&A and Swinburne Innovation Malaysia (SWIM) in Cambridge, United Kingdom on Wednesday. This ceremony was included as part of the prime minister’s official trip to the UK, kicking off on Tuesday.

Jane Mann, who leads partnership efforts in education at CUP&A, signed on behalf of Cambridge, whereas SWIM was represented by its chief executive officer, George Ngui.

Abang Johari stated that the program will utilize Bahasa Malaysia adhering to the national curriculum, while English will serve as a supplementary means of evaluation according to the Cambridge international syllabus.

As a strategic partner in this initiative, Swinburne University will collaborate with Cambridge to introduce these evaluations in Sarawak.

“This program seeks to develop students who are skilled in both languages, enabling them to further their studies in STEM fields,” he stated.

The leader further mentioned that the state is collaborating with Cambridge University to create various high-quality bilingual programs and scholarship opportunities aimed at enabling Sarawakian students to engage in studies related to growing strategic economic fields.

He mentioned that both sides concurred on facilitating meritorious Sarawakian students from international schools to be admitted into renowned overseas universities such as the University of Cambridge, Oxford, and the London School of Economics in the UK, along with Harvard University in the United States.

“Sarawak aims to reserve a specific quota of 10 spots for exceptional students in particular disciplines,” he further stated.
