A Night of Triumph for "One Battle After Another"

At the 2026 Golden Globes, held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 11, the comedy film One Battle After Another emerged victorious, securing the award for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. The ceremony, hosted by Nikki Glaser, was a night filled with excitement and celebration as the entertainment industry honored its brightest stars.

The film beat out strong contenders such as Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice, and Nouvelle Vague. Julia Roberts, who presented the award, remarked, “Jee whiz, that is a tough category.” This win marked the fourth award for One Battle After Another during the evening, making it the most awarded film of the night.

Earlier in the ceremony, the film took home awards for Best Supporting Female Actor, Motion Picture for Teyana Taylor, and Best Director and Best Screenplay, Motion Picture for Paul Thomas Anderson. These accolades highlighted the film’s impressive performances and creative vision.

During her acceptance speech for Best Picture, producer Sara Murphy expressed gratitude to the film’s director and stars, including Teyana, Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, and Regina Hall. She described their wins as “an embarrassment of riches.” Murphy also shared a heartfelt thank you to the film’s assistant director, Adam Somner, who passed away from thyroid cancer on November 27, 2024, at the age of 57.

“I wanna agree with Paul that this has been one of the most incredible filmmaking experiences,” she said. “Once in a lifetime, due largely in part to the person that we share this award with, the late Adam Somner, who we miss everyday.”

Paul Thomas Anderson also paid tribute to Adam during his speech for Best Director, calling him “the best” assistant director one could ever have. “It’s underselling it what he did for me and for us and for this film,” Paul said. “He’s why I’m standing here. He’s what made making this so much fun. I think it made you all seem to enjoy it the way you have.”

Surprises and Highlights

While One Battle After Another dominated the night, there were some surprises. Many fans were taken aback that Wicked: For Good was not among the nominees for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, although it still received five nominations, including ones for Cynthia Erivo for Best Actress and Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress.

In addition to its Best Picture win, One Battle After Another was the most nominated film of the evening, receiving nods for Best Original Score, as well as Best Actor and Actress for Leonardo DiCaprio and Chase Infiniti. The film also marked the first time Leo and Paul Thomas Anderson collaborated. The Oscar winner explained that the writer-director was the reason behind his decision to join the cast.

“Ultimately, wanting to do this movie was pretty simple,” Leonardo shared during a joint Esquire interview in August. “I’ve been wanting to work with you—Paul—for something like twenty years now, and I loved this idea of the washed-up revolutionary trying to erase his past and disappear and try and live some sort of normal life raising his daughter.”
