As I drive by Ouarzazate’s sun-scorched structures, a massive fortress draws my attention. It seems like it could be from a movie – which makes sense, considering this location has hosted some of the world’s top actors.

The structure is a brief drive fromAtlas Studios, where numerous renowned movies, includingGladiator, Astérix & Obélix and Prince of Persia, were established. The teams, directors, and performers frequently spend extended periods of time here throughout the filming process.

But Le Berbère Palacetakes a leading part of its own.

Within a mere thirty years, this hotel has emerged as a local icon – the pioneering high-end accommodation in southern Morocco.

Inside, the glitz of Hollywood combines with Berber comfort, featuring luxurious decorations, detailed mosaics, and a fountain that provides a soothing background melody.

Upon arrival, I am asked to take a seat for some mint tea and delicious snacks.

The ambiance is casual yet refined (‘very old money,’ I overhear someone nearby say), and unmistakably Moroccan.

Film props are scattered throughout each room, with some being more discreet than others, acknowledging the hotel’s ties to Hollywood.

To get to my room, I must go through the gardens, walking along paths surrounded by orange and lemon trees. As we pass through a shaded courtyard, the porter mentions that Anthony Hopkins enjoyed being here and playing with the kittens during the filming.Mary (2024).

What is the layout of the rooms?

The 249 rooms offer a subtle yet opulent atmosphere. Simple lines maintain a contemporary feel while retaining the Berber influence, featuring soft beige hues, cozy accent pillows, and handmade rugs.

My premium room was large, featuring both a shower and a tub. The oversized double bed was cozy, and I liked the efficient blackout curtains.

The room was provided with all standard facilities, but certain elements – like the phone and the leather folders containing the paperwork – could have used an update.

I was pleased with the little touches, such as the plate of candies upon arrival and the hair conditioner in the bathroom after I asked for an additional bottle.

What about the facilities?

Black soap cleaning, kessa glove scrubbing, rhassoul clay wrapping, and argan oil massages…

A variety of conventional therapies are available at the hotel’s hammam. The sauna and hot tub are practical yet appealing.

The fitness center is thoroughly equipped, and I find it hard to resist pushing myself on the devices that were apparently abandoned byDenzel Washington after filming Gladiator 2.

But the standout for me was the pool. Lush and open, it seemed like the ideal location for the next season ofWhite Lotus or The Night Manager, although it may be busy during peak hours.

There is also a passage commonly referred to as ‘theBrad Pittdoor,” reportedly from when he was in a relationshipAngelina Jolie.

Is it possible to consume food and beverages at Le Berbère Palace?

The primary dining area offers a combination of Moroccan and global cuisine, featuring an extensive buffet that emphasizes fresh salads, pastas, and the kind of slow-cooked tagines you would expect in this region of Morocco.

There’s also an Italiana restaurant called La Trattoria, along with a lounge bar for pre-dinner beverages or evening drinks, offering a concise yet reliable selection of wines, cocktails, and coffee.

The morning meal was outstanding, featuring a wide array of pastries, breads, fruits, and cold meats, with an egg station as the centerpiece. I enjoyed beginning my day with a freshly made omelette or msemen, which are traditional Moroccan square-shaped flatbreads.

What is the cost of the rooms at Le Berbère Palace in Ouarzazate?

Rooms begin at £74 during off-peak times, offering Superior, Deluxe, and Junior Suites. For unique events or family stays, the Vizir and Grand Vizir suites are available.

A two-person stay for three nights in a Superior room begins at £779, as reported by Expedia.
