This 1946 energetic adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s novel with the same title, released two years earlier, features Tyrone Power as an American pilot who is deeply affected by his time in World War I. He travels across Europe and India, including Paris and the Himalayas, in search of life’s purpose. This happens after he leaves his fiancée in Chicago and rejects a position as a stockbroker. In his own words, he chooses to “loaf” instead of embracing the comforts of affluent modern society. Eventually, he discovers contentment as a laborer.
