Actors frequently take on small roles for their friends and family as a enjoyable benefit of being on a film set. Early in 2023, Sophia Nomvete, who portrays the Dwarven Princess Disa in “The Rings of Power,”revealed via Instagramthat her baby daughter appeared as a Harfoot child in Season 1 of Amazon Studios’ series.”The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” author Philippa Boyens made appearance cameosfor her daughter, Phoebe Gittins, in both trilogies — as a “charming Hobbit child” and “Prancing Pony girl,” respectively.
It seems that these two are not the only ones who have managed to get their children onto the Middle-earth sets in uncredited roles. Viggo Mortensen also secured three roles for his young son during the filming of “The Lord of the Rings.” As per IMDb, Henry Mortensen portrayed a Rohan boy recruit and a Pelennor Orc in “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King,” respectively.
In 2019, a popular Instagram fan page posted three imagesImages of Henry on set, both dressed in costume and out of it with his father. The post also mentions a third appearance where Henry portrays a Gondor soldier in the Black Gate scene at the conclusion of “The Return of the King.” To add to the intriguing details, it notes that Henry is the first Orc Aragorn kills upon arriving at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, potentially making him the only child of an actor to be killed in battle by their parent on screen while in costume.

Henry persuaded his father to play the role of Aragorn.

As though Henry Mortensen’s portrayal of a teenage character in “The Lord of the Rings” wasn’t sufficient, the young actor was also the main reason his father ended up playing Aragorn. After director Peter Jackson decided that theinitial Aragorn actor, Stuart Townsend, was not old enough for the part, so he contacted Viggo Mortensen to ask if he would take the role. It was the eleventh hour, and filming had already started. Mortensen hesitated, and his son encouraged his father to commit to the role.
A few years ago, Mortensen recounted the story once more during an appearance onKelly and Ryan’s Live Show.I tend to start slowly, and I know you often need to be convinced to take on most roles,” Mortensen stated. “… I hadn’t read the books, and I ended up being a last-minute substitute. They were already in the middle of filming.
The American-Danish actor explained that his son, who was 11 years old at the time, asked him who he was portraying, and he answered, “It’s this guy. He’s in the woods with the little people.” His son then said, “In the woods with the little people? That character becomes the king.” Henry added, “You have to do that,” and from there, it all unfolded. At that point, the fact that Henry was able to use his father’s involvement to appear in several cameos became the final touch on his growing fame as the real-life son of Aragorn, son of Arathorn.
