Pawsperity Grooming Program Empowers 190+ Students to Succeed in Careers

A Unique Approach to Ending Generational Poverty

In Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Governor Mike Kehoe highlighted a unique non-profit organization during his recent State of the State address. The Kansas City-based Pawsperity is making waves with its innovative approach to ending generational poverty through pet grooming and life skills training.

Pawsperity is more than just a pet grooming program. It offers hands-on job training that has helped over 190 students secure stable careers, allowing them to move away from government assistance programs. The program focuses on providing not only professional skills but also essential life skills that can transform individuals’ lives.

Supporting Individuals in Need

Jennifer Strickland, the Director of Development and Community Relations at Pawsperity, explained that many of the students come from challenging backgrounds. These include homelessness, domestic violence, incarceration, addiction, and often single motherhood. Despite these obstacles, the students are determined to change their lives.

The Pawsperity program includes extensive grooming training, along with nearly 100 hours of life skill courses. These courses cover topics such as budgeting, parenting, emotion regulation, professionalism, and communication. Strickland emphasized the importance of these skills for both personal and professional growth.

In addition to the training, students have access to wraparound services and resources. This includes housing, case managers, and an on-site food pantry. These support systems help ensure that students can focus on their education and future without worrying about basic needs.

Success Stories

Christine Banks is one of the nearly 200 success stories from the Pawsperity program. She never imagined owning a grooming salon until she started the program ten years ago. Learning from Pawsperity inspired her to set new goals for herself.

Banks now owns The Salon Furever Pets in Lee’s Summit. She employs Pawsperity graduates at her salon, helping others achieve the same success she did. The life skills courses she took during the program had a significant impact on her and her children.

Banks shared how the program changed her perspective on saving money and planning for the future. She now has the tools to save for emergencies and build a better life for her family.

After graduating from Pawsperity, Banks faced a car breakdown. Thanks to the savings she had built up, she was able to get her car fixed and continue working and taking her children to school.

Expanding the Program

During the State of the State address, Governor Kehoe announced that the 2026 budget includes funding for Pawsperity and plans to expand the program. He emphasized the importance of supporting Pawsperity’s proven workforce development and social enterprise model in other communities across the state.

Strickland shared that Pawsperity staff hopes to announce more details about the expansion later this year. Their goal is to expand beyond their current facility and impact more lives by replicating their successful model in other communities.

Pawsperity continues to make a difference in the lives of those it serves. Through its comprehensive approach, the program is helping individuals break the cycle of poverty and build brighter futures.
