The 2026 TV schedule has finally given us Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and for many, it is worth the wait. Critics expressed their opinions about the series after watching the first set of episodes, and I believe it’s significant that they are pointing out two positive aspects about this “deeply sincere” series available with aParamount+ subscription.
I wrote a positive review of the series for live streaming movie film onlinebut honestly, I’m a Trekkie who enjoys watching the franchise take bold risksas it has with numerous new additions. Not everyone was immediately excited that the first series focusing on Starfleet Academy would take place in the 32nd century, the same era as later seasons ofDiscovery, and a doubtful advertisement for the serieshad a young adult vibe that didn’t appeal to everyone.
Fortunately, AV Club’s Elijah Gonzaleswas a supporter of what has been shown up to this point, and mentioned that the narrative has begun in an intriguing manner:
On first glance, the show’s first six episodes seem to validate some of these concerns. More so than Lower Decks’ humorous moments, this series represents a major shift that initially has more in common with CW teen dramas such as 90210 than with Kirk or Picard’s intense missions. However, as time goes on, this strange collection that no one requested ends up being an unexpected case of opposites attracting, a genuinely heartfelt show that effectively blends teenage discomfort with numerous science fiction scenarios: interstellar diplomacy, ethical challenges posed by technology, and terrifying alien cannibals from distant space.
The skin is different, but it’s evident from these episodes that the underlying structure is similar.Star Trek are in this show. Angie Han from THRdemonstrates in a different manner in her critique, pointing out thatthe strong cast compensates for the flaws in the initial episodes:
The most outstanding aspects of the show — the elements that make you willing to overlook other flaws — are its characters, who appear in the Alex Kurtzman-directed first episode already well-developed.
NPR’s Eric Deggansaddresses the general potential seen in the first six episodes ofStar Trek: Starfleet Academy, recognizing that it still has some areas that could be improved. There is enjoyment to be found, but none of these characters are in the same category as thebest Star Trek characters yet:
However, up to now, the episodes shown to critics—the first six out of ten in the season—appear more like an encouraging group of characters and plots laying the groundwork for future success, rather than demonstrating its worth beyond the fame of Kirk and Spock.
In honesty, Captain Kirk and Spock were canceled after only three seasons on TV, and it required a fan movement, reruns, and genuine effort to develop their legend and truly establishStar Trekmoving. Now, a new generation is attempting to revitalize the franchise in 2025, and asVariety’s Aramide Tinubunotes, it’s to guarantee the franchise can endure for many years ahead:
In summary, ‘Starfleet Academy’ offers an enjoyable and thrilling experience. It may differ from what dedicated Trekkies are used to, but that could be the intention. For the franchise to endure for at least another 60 years, it needs to mirror our real world. There should be room for characters who identify as queer, those with multiple heritages, and mixed-race individuals. It’s evident in various aspects (on TV and in reality) that the previous generation has failed to meet expectations. As ‘Starfleet Academy’ states, it’s now the responsibility of a new generation to address the issues they have inherited.

It’s logical that a show set in a school would emphasize learning from history while also helping its young characters prepare for the future. The six episodes available for review are occasionally inconsistent, but they showcase ‘Star Trek’ at its finest, portraying an optimistic yet difficult future with imagination and energy.
These reviews highlighting the talented cast and the promise of better storytelling serve as positive indicators for the series, but they will not significantly affect its near-term prospects.Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. That being said, it has an 85% approval rating from thirty-nine reviews onRotten Tomatoescarries some significance in my view regarding the agreement on this show, as there is more to appreciate than dislike about this new season.
